"WYMYN" is a term invented by English speaking women as a new expression which doesn't include “men”in the spelling. There are other spelling such as:"WYMYN, WOMYN, WIMYN"and so on.

Dancing Nana:Niki de Saint Phalle

ART PROJECT WYMYN

Do you know an artist named Niki de Saint Phalle? She has produced in a series of female sculptures named Nana- a pregnant woman, a bride, a prostitute, a witch.....and so on.

Her works are popular among feminists in Japan. For IWD 1998, inspired by Niki's works, we made our own wymyn's statue with many wishes for wymyn's future written on her body.
It was called "NANA PROJECT".

Here in Nagoya, there happens to be an advertising figure called Nana-chan Ningyo(Nana doll) in front of Nagoya station. Therefore, we adopted "WYMYN" as the name of our figure in order not to be confused with the other image of the same name.

Our "WYMYN"'s body was feminist purple and her hair orange and golden, shining like the sun. Women worked through the nights to give birth to her, coming from a distance they joined the IWD on that day, and took the lead in the parade.
We marched through the main streets of Sakae with our "WYMYN", symbol of our hope.

The organising group

"Wai wai WYMYN"

In Nagoya the IWD has been celebrated in various ways since 1993. We have called this recent IWD organizing group "Wai wai WYMYN". The members are from all over the world: Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Canada, England, America, the Netherlands and India. The meetings and the publications are presented bilingually: in English and Japanese.
For IWD in '99, we hope that you will join us from many other countries, communities. And we also invite you to send us short articles and contributions for our website.
