Slayers Series Spin-Off The Thing He Sees Beyond the Point of His Sword
(first published in Fantasia Battle Royal, the October extra issue of monthly Dragon Magazine, in 2000.)
Characters Gourry Gabriev, the Black Haired Man, Kyle Bunitz (Village Mayor), Ruzouru
Gourry had been traveled alone, and he had arrived the village of Kulsida, the village near the sea. At the horbor, Gourry tried to throw his sword away to the sea, but a man stoped him.

It was a black haired man (*), who had a fishing rod in his hand, and unlit cigarrette in his mouth. The man said that he had been a mercenary, and thus he was been interested in Gourry's attempt to throw his sword away. The black haired man said, "when I was a mercenary, I had a policy to call a man 'second class' when he doesn't care about his sword, and to call a man 'under the third class' when he is hard of his sword." Gourry asked the man's name, but the man said it wasn't polite asking other's name without telling his name first. Gourry gave his name, but the black haired man baffled Gourry and didn't give his name.

Somewhere near them, someone observed Gourry and the black haired man. The watcher was interested that what "they" would do for Gourry, because he seemed to be a mercenary. If "they" would failed "their" business, Gourry would kill "them", the watcher expected.

The black haired man supposed that someone was watching at him, when he walked toward the village. He saw a shack, and went there to see inside, but he couldn't find anybody. He walked away from the shack for his dinner at the inn.

In the dining room of the inn, Gourry sat alone, and the black haired man came and took the seat of Gourry's table. It was clear that the man wanted to kill his time in making Gourry his toy. But when they talked, the village mayor came in with two villagers. They asked Gourry to help them. Gourry accepted to listen the village mayor's story, and Kyle Bunitz, the village mayor, talked something with the hostess of the inn, who was busy to cook the guests' dinner. Mr. Bunitz, explained that he would pay for the two travelers' dinner, and they sat on the same table. Gourry and the black haired man listened to Mr. Bunitz's, eating salad and bread.

When Gourry tried to stick the boiled fish with his fork, the black haired man pointed that the fish was poisoned. Mr. Bunitz's men tried to take Gourry's sword, but he was faster and knocked the villager down. Gourry and the black haired man ran out of the inn, and found that all of the villagers had come together to kill two travelers. The black haired man threatened the villagers, and they opened a way for two travelers to run away from the village.

On the hill in the night, the black haired man and Gourry talked over what to do. The villagers began the sweeping search of the hill. Gourry asked for the man's idea, and the black haired man gave two plans, one was easy, and another was complex. The easy way was to run away from the village and forget about the incident at all. The complex way was to find the reason for the villager to try to kill them and to remove the cause. Gourry supported the latter. The black haired man said it might be really difficult to do, but Gourry said, "In my family, there were troubles over this sword. I ran away from home with this sword, thinking that were not for this sword... But, you told me that I would be able to do something when I had this sword. Now, I want to try to see what I can do when I have this sword in my hands." The black haired man smiled and they went down the hill to catch some villager.

When Gourry and the black haired man found four men from the village, only the black haired man showed himself before the villagers. One man tried to knock him down with his crab, but the black haired man knocked the villager down with his fishing rod. He threatened the villager and asked for the reason why the villager wanted to kill the travelers. The villager said, "if we don't, we'll be killed!" And after he said his words, his body exploded.

Gourry felt that something had been there when the villager was killed, but he also felt that it had disappeared soon. The black haired man said that he seemed to find out the background of the incident, and he began to walk for the village. Gourry asked for the explanation, but the black man refused since he had no confidence on his imagination. The man told Gourry to run awan when the black haired man said to do, because if his imagination was right, the enemy might be special.

In the village, the black haired man expose that there had been Mazoku and it had ordered the villagers to kill travelers. Tha Mazoku Ruzouru showed itself from the shadow of the dark shack, and it attacked Gourry and the black haired man with balls of its magical power. The black haired man channeled his power of will to his fishing rod and hit Ruzouru. The Mazoku was shocked to be damaged by a fishing rod and attacked the black haired man frantically. At that time, Gourry drew his sword and ran for Ruzouru. The Mazoku didn't dodge him because a Mazoku couldn't be harmed by an ordinary sword, but Gourry took the blade from the hilt and created the blade of light with his power of will. The sword was legendary Sword of Light. Gourry cut the body of Ruzouru, and the head and shoulder of Ruzouru flew up to the air, since the true body of the Mazoku was its head. Then, the black haired man cast an Elmekia Lance at Ruzouru, and Gourry jumped high using the sheath of his sword and bisected the head of the Mazoku.

After the battle, the black haired man begged for the Sword of Light enthusiastically, but Gourry refused to give it up. When Mr. Bunitz thanked, the black haired man declared that he would report that the villagers had killed many travelers. He hated the villagers' pretending as victims of Mazoku, and he threatened them not to cheat the officers. And then he left the village with Gourry.

Several days later, Gourry realized that he hadn't been given the black man's name, but they had been apart for four days. Gourry didn't know if he could do something with his Sword of Light, but he wanted to do something. At that time, he noticed that a girl was surrounded by bandits. Gourry regarded that the girl was a sorceress and she didn't need help, but he thought it wasn't bad to do something with his sword. And he drew his sword and said loudly. "Alright guys. That's enough." And he met with the girl.
