When they stopped at an inn, they were attacked by Zolf and some trolls, but Lina drove them off. That night, Zolf returned, this time with Zelgadiss, who asked Lina to sell the items which she had obtained from the bandits. She rejected the offer.

    On the next night, the two were attacked again, this time by Rodimus and more trolls. When Lina and Gourry were ready to fight, a priest entered. It was Rezo the Red Priest. He said that Zelgadis intended to resurrect the dark lord Shabranigudo, and that he opposed the chimera. Rezo said that if Lina gave him the items that Zelgadiss sought for, she and Gourry would be safe. But she rejected the offer again, as she didn't trust the Red Priest.

    On the next day, Zelgadiss attacked Lina and Gourry, and managed to capture her. However, she had given the items to Gourry. Unable to find the item he sought for, Zelgadiss made up his mind to use her instead of killing her. He released her, but was interrupted by Rezo. Lina then knew that Rezo was Zelgadiss' commander.

    Zelgadiss was transformed by Rezo and he hated the Red Priest so much that he longed for revenge. He ran away with Lina. In the morning, Zelgadiss told Lina about the true story. Rezo had searched for the Philosopher's Stone, in an attempt to cure his blindness. There was a statue made of orihalcon among the items which Lina had taken from the bandits. The Philosopher's Stone was hidden in that statue.

    Rezo sent trolls, berserkers, weremantises, etc., after Zel and Lina. Gourry came to help Lina. He killed a Mazoku with his sword of light. Then Zolf and Rodimus joined with Zel. Before them, Rezo the Red Priest appeared. He seized Lina and demanded Gourry give him the Philosopher's Stone in exchange for her life. Gourry met the demand.

    As soon as Rezo get the Philosopher's Stone, he swallowed it. Then his eyes opened, but those eyes weren't the eyes of human. They were red holes. Then Rezo transformed into the dark lord, Ruby Eye Shabranigudo.

    Zolf attacked the dark lord with Dragon Slave, the most powerful offensive spell in the black magic, but failed to damage it. Shabranigudo killed Zolf and Rodimus. Lina, Gourry and Zel fled from the dark lord.

    Finally they decided to fight with Shabranigudo. The dark lord was impervious to Lina's and Zel's spells. They tried to kill the dark lord with Gourry's sword of light, but that didn't work either. Then Lina took the sword of light, spoke a spell of the Lord of Nightmare, and she cast the Giga Slave. Shabranigudo tried to stop her, but the soul of Rezo still remained in Shabranigudo, and he stood in the dark lord's way. Lina killed the Ruby Eye with the Giga Slave.
