| Lina's party arrived at the Gairia City, the capital city of the Kingdom of Dilss. One the night before, Lina had been attacked by Raltark, and Xelloss struck back and chased him. Lina knew that Raltark wanted to kill her, and Xelloss was trying to protect her. There had to be two factions among the Mazoku. In Gairia City, Lina went around to look for any way to fight with Mazoku, and on her way, she met a little boy. He tried to rob her change purse, but Lina caught him. Lina asked the boy to talk about the rumors in the city, and he told that the general Rarshart had gathered many sorcerers and let the soldiers master black magic. Lina imagined that King Dilss III was attempting revenge for his father, who said to be cursed by Mazoku at the Katart Mountains. Lina and the others planed to investigate the castle, but they couldn't find a way inside. Soon after, while reading a book in the library of the Sorcerers Guild in Gairia City, two soldiers came ot take Lina to the castle. She was greeted by General Rarshart, who asked her to be a part time instructor for his army. She wanted to go back and talk with her friends, but Rarshart didn't allow her to leave the castle. He said he would call for them and Lina should wait them inside the castle. While she waited for the others to arrive, someone locked the door of her room from the outside and cast an offensive spell into the room. Lina defended against the spell and flew up into the sky to get away. A Mazoku with a black body and white face chased after her and threw tons of balls of magical power at her. She dodged them, but the balls then struck the city and castle indiscriminately. Soon, Gairia City was enveloped in flames. Lina was attacked by two other Mazoku that appeared in the sky, but they were killed by Xelloss. Xelloss and Lina landed and walked together in search for Lina's comrades. Soon Lina found a boy lying in the street. He was the boy who robbed her purse and told her the rumors of the city. Xelloss said, "his heart isn't beating", and they left him. On their way, they were attacked by a multitude of Mazoku, but Xelloss killed all of them in an instant. Lina realized that Xellos was extremely powerful. Finally, Rarshart entered and Xelloss revealed that Rarshart was the general and Raltark was the priest of the Chaos Dragon. Xelloss was about twice as powerful as Rarshart and almost killed the general, but Zel, Gourry, and Ameria were surprised to see Mazoku fighting and shouted, distracting Xelloss and giving Rarshart a chance to run away. Lina told her allies about Xelloss and his plan to take her to the original Clare Bible. Ameria threatened Xelloss that, if he wouldn't reveal his secrets, she would say "life is wonderful" to him all through the night. Xelloss said that the plan came from the Hellmaster, not from his true master the Greater Beast, and he didn't get the details from Hellmaster. He explained that the four of five subordinate Mazoku Lords of Ruby Eye Shabranigudo had each created their priests and generals but his master had created only Xelloss. From his words (and lack of respect - Xelloss did not use "-sama" when naming Gaav, as he did with the other Mazoku Lords), Lina deduced that the Chaos Dragon turned traitor to Shabranigudo. Lina wanted to know the truth, so she agreed to go to the location of the Clare Bible, and Xelloss agreed to take her to Dragons' Peak. Gourry, Ameria and Zel agreed to go with Lina. On their way to Dragons' Peak, they were attacked by Raltark and Rarshart. The two Mazoku in Gaav's service set fire to the woods and let Lina to be burned to death. Raltark revealed the reason why they wanted to kill Lina was because they had heard that the Hellmaster had begun to carry out his plan, and Lina Inverse was somehow important for the plan. Raltark and its master didn't know the details, but they reasoned that if Hellmaster was in favor of it, they should be against it, and killing Lina was the easiest way to stop Hellmaster. Xelloss fought with Raltark and Rarshart, leaving Lina and her company to escape by flying away from the burning woods. Finally, they arrived at the Dragons' Peak. Xelloss came two days after, and said that he couldn't defeat Raltark and Rarshart together. He asked Mirgazia, the eldest golden dragon of Dragons' Peak, to guide Lina to the Clare Bible. Mirgazia agreed to Xelloss, because he was afraid of the priest of the Greater Beast. Xelloss had slain hundreds of the golden dragons of Dragons' Peak personally during the Dark Lord's Descent War about one thousand years ago. Mirgazia guided only Lina to the Clare Bible, as it was in a warped subspace and only he knew way to go and come back. Upon reaching the Bible, Lina asked to it about the Lord of Nightmares. She got the answer, but before she could ask her next question, Raltark interrupted. Mirgazia pushed Lina out of the warped space and Xelloss arrived to help her. Xelloss and Lina rejoined the others, but Raltark and Rarshart appeared. All three Mazoku started fighting, and Raltark left one Mazoku behind to kill Lina. It was one Mazoku, but had two ball-shaped bodies. Ameria hit one of them with her hand, encased in the Visfarank spell, and Zel cut another with his Astral Vine-augmented sword. The balls exploded and Ameria was seriously wounded. Mirgazia saved her with dragon's magic. Lina helped Xelloss to kill Raltark, and Rarshart ran away. Xelloss explained how the Chaos Dragon had become an enemy of Ruby Eye. Rarshart came back, this time with his commander, Gaav the Chaos Dragon. The powerful Mazoku attacked Xelloss and dealt serious damage to the Mazoku. Gaav and Rarshart revealed the fact that it was Xelloss who had destroyed the city of Gairia. Gaav asked Xelloss if he had heard from his master about Hellmaster's plan. Xelloss replied that he had, but ran away to the astral side. Gaav said that he would kill Lina in order to survive, and told Lina to oppose him with all of her power. Gourry said he would protect her and drew his Sword of Light, which Garv recognized, calling it "Gorunnova". Gaav and Gourry fought with swords, and Lina chanted a revised version of the spell Ragna Blade, with her new understanding of the power of the Lord of Nightmares. She attacked Gaav with the Ragna Blade and severed his right arm, but she couldn't kill the Chaos Dragon. Gaav blew Lina and Gourry away with magical shock wave, but then out gave a cry of pain.
