Lina, Amelia and Gourry put on the swim wears and made merry on the beach in the small island. But Luke got angry and kicked at Lina. "Do you forget who is responsible for our being shipwrecked? You have to find our things!" On the day before, Lina, Gourry, Amelia, Zelgadiss, Luke and Miriena attacked a ship of pirates and at that time Lina cast a powerful spell because she had lost her temper with the pirates' all manner of abuse. Lina's clothes and items were safe, but Luke and Miriena lost their armors and laggages. Lina and Luke quarrelled, and Miriena said calmly at them, "it's make no sense to quarrel here. It's better for us to seach of a clue."
Gourry couldn't understand Miriena's being serious. For Gourry, the island was a very good for he could have delicious foods and the villagers were nice to him and his friends.
In the restaurant in the village, Lina explained Gourry that they couldn't get out of the island. Zelgadiss who had investigated the situation and gathered the information in the village added, "the villagers in this island seem not to have the skill to build a ship big enough to travel to the other island or the nation."

The waitress Lulu | Gourry suggested to fly over the sea by the flying spell, but Zel explained that it was impossible for any magic user to fly to the land which wasn't in the view from the island's shore. Then Gourry suggested to build a big ship for themselves and Lina knocked him down. The waitress of the restraunt smiled at them. She was Lulu, who had found the shipwrecked Lina and her friends and helped them in the morning of that day.
Then there came the priest Ranzam, who was the village mayor at the same time. He explained that the ocean current around the island pushed back anything came out of the island. Therefore, the villagers couldn't go out of the island and they didn't have big ships.

Listening to Ranzam's explanation, Amelia felt dipressed because she had to have a talk with the diplomats from another nation in the next week. Lulu sang a song for her. "Just put yourself in the hand of the gentle wind / You can listen the song and the whisper of breeze". She said "this is a part of the hymn written by Mr. Ranzam and it means that there is a happiness right before your eyes, but you can't know it unless you'll see around with calm heart. I think that you'd better to praise your fortune not to lot lose anyone of your group."
Leaving the restaurant, Amelia saw that Lulu and Ranzam stood hand in hand before the door. She felt that it would be good to enjoy a peaceful life in the village, but Lina and Luke were bored. Luke said "we are the seeds of troubles, you know. If we stay in this peaceful village, some troubles will come. I don't want it happen because I'm in debt of the villagers." Then, they decided to make three groups to investigate the sisuation. Miriena and Zel, Amelia and Luke, and Lina and Gourry tied up the groups. Luke felt irritated because he deeply fell in love with Miriena and run toward Zel and Miriena leaving Amelia behind in the street.

Suddenly, an explosion occured in the main street where Amelia stood. Amelia was blown away and before the eyes of Luke, a femal pirate Noa and two beastmen stood. Luke noticed that Noa had a gun of magical bullets in her left hand.
She threatened the villager to bring her the treasures and shot bullets of magic again and again. She seemed to be irritated with the frightened villagers and then she noticed Lulu who gave a cry of fear. Noa grined and aimed at Lulu and Ranzam.

At that time, Amelia gave a proud speech from the top of a high tower. Noa was surprised but she didn't flinched. "Even if you give a proud-looking name, you are an idiot girl who shows the underwear at the top of the tower!" Amelia was ashamed and fell down on the earth. (In this manga, Amelia doesn't put on a pair of pants as she does in TV anime, but she puts on a very short pleated skirt. It seems that the manga artist prefer to draw the scenes in which the girls show their underwears meaninglessly. Amelia also shows her underwear when she bow to Lulu and when she fight against the enemies.)
Lina was laughing at Amelia's falling down, and she was going to cast an offensive spell, but Miriena stopped her. She told Lina that the villagers were extremely frightened by Noa's simple small magical item, and she felt it was wierd. Zelgadiss agreed her. "It's better for us not to use the offensive spells before the eyes of the villagers." But Miriena felt that there was something else than a fear for magic among the villagers. She told Luke not to use magic through signs. It was easy for Luke to knock down the pirate and two beastmen without the magic or the sword, but Amelia was faster. She kicked away two beastmen and threw away Noa without magic. She told them, "have a sense of honor! Live and work honestly! Don't use violence anymore!" Noa and two beastmen fled from the village. Gourry praised Amelia and said, "you are generous. If Lina knocked the pirates down, she wouldn't let them go. She would take their ship by force." Hearing Gourry's words, Lina and others (except Gourry) began to chase Noa. Priest Ranzam followed them with his eyes, and held Lulu in his arms. "Don't worry Lulu. Those pirates won't appear again. All the scary things that make you frightened won't come again..."

The masked soldiers | In the night, Noa and two beastmen talked on their ship that was at anchor at the beach. She removed the eye patch and revealed the cute and gentle face. Their talk was mysterious. It seemed that Noa had a plan to make villagers "wake up" and then she could "take back something to her".
Suddenly, many masked soldier came in the ship and kicked Noa and two beastmen out on the beach. Noa realized that those soldiers were the members of the organization which had changed her homeland. The soldiers decided to caught Noa alive because she knew the past of the island, and they were going to kill two beastmen. Noa cried out for help, and the offensive magic spell blew several soldiers away. It was Lina and her friends. She said "you have to pay the suitable price for my ship!" The soldiers explained that they were the vigilante group of the island and were going to get rid of the pirates. But Amelia said "what you are doing is the sexual assault on a young girl, and you can't be justice!" Then the fight began.

Gourry's sword, Zelgadiss' Bram Gash and Amelia's martial arts overwhelmed the masked soldiers, and the soldiers tried to change their formation. One thier way, Luke and Miriena cast a Blade Haut and Vice Flare, and in the result, the soldier were forced to stand in front of Lina Inverse. She cast a Dragon Slave, and all of the masked soldier were killed except one men whom Lina let survive, because she wanted to take informaions about the organization from the prisoner. But the survived man shot his own head with his gun. Zelgadiss was surprised, "those men didn't seem to be trained well. It's unnatural for a man of that group to kill himself only to shut his mouth." Amelia doubted that the man was a member of a cult. Gourry said, "when I was a mercenary, I saw a soldier's killing himself many times. It was common that those who kill themselves so easily believed something blindly, and therefore their eyes were lifeless. But this guy's eyes were alive... as alive as the eyes of a rober who was just going to run after he got a precious treasure or something..."
Amelia cured Noa's injuries by her Recovery. Noa proposed Lina that Noa would bring them out of the island and she asked to help her. Lina refused because she didn't want to be involved in troubles. She said, "I already helped you from those soldiers. So I demand you to give this ship as a reward." But Gourry suggested that it was better for them to be helped by a professional mariner to get out of the difficult ocean current. Luke said, "Noa, I saw that you are a honest girl. Tell us the reason why you pretended to be a pirate. When you explain honestly, we may help you." |
Noa's story went like this.
Noa was a villager of this island up to several years ealier. When she had been in this island, this place was a relay port for those ships that came and went between the nations. This island lay at the center of many sea routes. Several years earlier, the pirates attacked the village and took the money and treasures away again and again. Noa got angry and proposed the villager to fight against the pirates, but nobody agreed with her. Then Noa left the island in order to bring back something or someone to help the island. However, she was a poor student of sword and magic, and she lost all of the money. Finally, she had been starved and roobed an apple, and a sorceress burned down her clothes with one fireball. That sorceress felt pity for her and gave Noa the gun of the magic bullet. Noa described the sorceress as "she always put on a costume like a bikini, always did idiot behavior, and always lost her way". Lina remember one sorceress, but Noa didn't tell her name.

Noa's story continued.
Noa had to spent a few more years before she got a ship and came back to the island. When she came home, she saw the same building and the same people there but the life and the memories of the people were different. At the place of the alter for the god of the village, there was a strange chapel, and no villagers remembered Noa. Noa thought that people lost their memories for some reason, and she had a plan to attack the village as a pirate in order to make the villagers to be so frightened as to remember their lost memories.
Zelgadiss suggested "those villagers may have done something to change themselves. It's possible that they pretend not to remember you." Miriena had another opinion. "I can't think that it's possible to lose all of the memories about someone who spent many years together in the same place. Moreover, we can't leave this place without make it clear the problems of ships and the ocean current." Finally, Lina agreed to help Noa. Noa was pleased and her dog and cat were pleased, too. Those dog and cat were afraid of Amelia, because they were two beastmen whom Amelia kicked down several hours ealier. Noa explained, "my master sorceress did a magic for them and they can be the beastmen for one day in a week." Amelia was surprised with such a high-leveled and half-finished magic. Again Lina recalled a sorceress but she feared to talk about the sorceress.

Xelloss joined the supper | After they decided to help Noa, Lina and Miriena checked the magical weapons of those masked soldiers. Luke and Amelia caught fish and cook them by the bonfire. Luke handed cooked fish one by one, but there was no fish for Noa. He counted the hands with fish again, and found that a strange young man joined them. It was Xelloss.

| Lina asked Xelloss what he was doing in the island, and he explained about the position of the island. According to Xelloss, the island lay at the point where the world of Shabranigudo and Ciephied adjoined with another world. |

Therefore it might be possible for some extroadinary things to happen there. Lina said, "I see that you are interested in this island, but it doesn't tell me the reason why you appear before me. What do you want me to do?" Xelloss answered "it's a secret", standing behind Lina. Luke and Miriena were surprised by Xelloss' quick move, and they were cautious about him. Xelloss said goodbye to them, and whe he passed Luke by, he said, "is your lodger well?" Luke was astonished and turned back, but he couldn't find Xelloss. Lina didn't explain about Xelloss to Luke and Miriena, but she said that as long as Xelloss was interested in the island, the mysterious things about this island wasn't fantasy of Noa.
Later that night, Lina, Amelia, Gourry, Zelgadiss and Noa slept on the ship, and Luke and Miriena sat by the bonfire at the shore. Luke was irritated by Xelloss' words, but he told nothing to Miriena.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the island, someone put a hourglass on the center of a magic circle. There was a naked young girl, lying under a thin cloth. The person told her "don't worry. When you'll wake up and open your eyes, you'll see the same morning. Just sleep in peace." And then, a plenty of strange power covered the island. All the magic users felt that, and Luke felt sick. Lina and others decided to go to the village when the day would break.

When Lina and friends came to the village, they saw that there was no damage in the streets. On the day before, Noa shot many bullets at the walls and the wooden boxes but the walls and the boxes had no trace of being shot. Then they met Lulu, and talking with her, Lina studied that Lulu remembered Lina and others but she didn't remember what had happened one day before. Lina made up her mind to give a strong shock to the villagers and chant the spell of Fireball. But when she shouted the word with power, her magic didn't work. Zelgadiss and Amelia also tried several more spells, but none of them worked. There came the priest Ranzam with a guitar in his hands. He said to Lina "I have a good song for you. How about the song about those flowers blooming here? You didn't see them yesterday for the smoke and the flame." His words froze Zelgadiss and Miriena because he meant that he remembered what had happened one day before. Lina said, "oh, the song must be a masterpiece. Will you play it for us?"

The villagers asked Lulu where was the priest Ranzam. She answered "he went to the chapel with Lina and her friends to talk. I think that they and we can be friends." But in the chapel Lina and her friends were surrounded by many masked soldiers. They were controled by Ranzam. Gourry felt that those soldiers were more tangerous than the enemies whom he fought the night before. In the garden of the chapel, Noa found several gravestones with the names of her neighbours. But she had seen them alive in the village. She got angry and drew the weapon of the magical bullet, but before she shot the priest, her weapon was broken apart by the masked soldiers' magical bullets. Lina knew that Noa's weapon was destroyed by a Blam Fang. Lina wondered why the enemies' spell worked while Lina's and her friends' spell were sealed. The soldiers drew their swords and pointed them at Noa, Lina and others. And Ranzam began to talk...
Months before, Ranzam had been a sorcerer and had studied the deminsions from the sorcerous perspective. He had come to the area in order to do a field work. But his ship had sank and he had been washed ashore to the island. It was Lulu who found Ranzam, and he felt that he saw an angel at that time. Lulu was another victim of the wreck and had been washed ashore about one year earlier. Ranzam and Lulu fell in love, and he studied eagerly the wierd deminsions around the island. One day the pirates came while Ranzam studied an underground cave in the island. He was too late to save Lulu. She gave herself to the pirates in order to save other villager. When Ranzam arrived the village, Lulu had been killed. Ranzam got mad and killed all of the pirates, but it wasn't enough for him. He couldn't stand the world without Lulu and he decided to restore the world to be what it should have been. The world would have Lulu and all of the villagers lived in peace.
Listening to Ranzam, Lina thought, "it isn't logical. It is impossible for any sorcerer to make the world as he hopes... But..." She remebered what Xelloss had told her one night before. He said, "it may be possible for some extroadinary things to happen here." Ranzam saw Lina's tinking hard and said, "you may be a skilled sorceress and you notice that my story has contradictions with the sorcerous theories. All of your doubt and fear are correct, I guess." According to him, he used the power of the Sea of Chaos to change the space in the island, to seal the "changed" world and to repeat it again and again in the sands sealed in an hourglass and it was all what he could do. When something came to relate the "changed" world with the space in the real time, there could be distortions in the "changed" world . He shouted at Noa, "you are the girl from this island and you have the real life in the real time! Moreover, you are trying to make the villagers to remember their real life! Such your deed put this world into a great danger!" Noa was so frightened and she wet her clothes. Ranzam regreted his losing his temper and ordered the soldiers to withdraw. "Those soldiers violent behavior was one of the distortions which are brought by you. I can't let those who no this secret go out of this island, and I don't want to harm those who can be the friends of Lulu. She wishes to be your friends. Therefore, I ask you to stay in this island." |
At that time, Xelloss appeared on the broken roof. He revealed that the power of the Sea of Chaos was too much for the small island and the excess power was encroaching the adjoining point of two worlds. It was the real world which was distorted by the power of the Sea of Chaos. Ranzam whispered himself. "The more I hope Lulu's happy life, the more the real world is distorted. Why the world refuse Lulu to come alive..." Then he went into another room in the chapel. Lina and others couldn't follow him and Xelloss incited them to stop Ranzam. Lina asked him, "why do you suggest us to stop him? The destruction of the world is what you want, don't you?" Xelloss replied, "Distortion isn't the destruction." Lina said, "why you tell us so clearly? You always make us baffled with obscure talks. As far as you aren't willing to put an end to this situation for yourself, I think that the Mazoku aren't harmed by this magic. Then there must be something important for you here." Amelia interrupted to ask Lina what to do, and Xelloss said it wasn't natural for Amelia to hesitate to punish the man who was doing an evil magic for the world. There was a problem for the humans. If they would stop Ranzam's magic, Lulu would have gone.
Observing their hesitating, the leader of the soldiers told them. "If some of you will exit from this stage, our drama will have a good end." Lina saw his face and was surprised that it was the man who killed himself one night before. Gourry sait, "as long as the end of scenario can be changed, the drama can't have an exciting climax." Then the battle began.

Those soldiers weren't ordered to kill Lina and others, but they felt it was necessary because they had to protect the existence of the village. Gourry shouted at Lina, "run with Noa! I can't protect you now!" And one of the magical bullet broke Miriena's sword. Amelia was so excited with the battle, and forgot that she couldn't use magic and used Visfarank to her fists. Lina tried to stop her, but it was too late. Remembering that her unable to use magic, Amelia just tried to give a blow of a fist at the enemy. To her surprise, the spell worked and the enemy was knocked down. Lina got an idea and got several magical bullets from Noa. Those magical bullets sealed one magicl spell and when it impacted on the target, the spell broke the spell and worked. When Lina threw the bullets at the enemies all of the spell in the bullets worked. Watching it, Zelgadiss and Luke drew their sword. Zel used Astral Vine in order to channel his magical power to his sword, and Luke used Ruby Eye blade to make his sword have the power of the dark lord. Their spells worked and they killed the soldiers easily. Gourry asked Lina what was going on and she answered, "our magic isn't sealed. What Ranzam did was to make the space absorb the effect of each spells soon after the spell left the hand of the magic user. When we touch the target and cast a spell, there is no space between our hands and the target and our spells work." Zelgadiss said, "it's a good tactics for the ordinary soldiers to fight against the skilled magic users." But Miriena said, "I think that Ranzam only wanted to hide the effects of magic spells from the villagers because offensive spell are the symbols of a battle."

Suddenly, there appeared a crack in the space. Zel said, "is it an effect of our spells with the sword?" Lina wondered, "but both of you didn't use a lot of power. The effect seems to be too large. Is there any other power to effect this space?" Luke seemed to know something but he said nothing. And Noa gave a cry of surprise. Through the crack in the air, they could see the true scenary of the village. Noa wept, "they are in gloomy air. Are they happy to live in this peaceful dream? But I want to meet with them... the neighbors! I'd rather weep with them than laugh all alone!" Feeling sympathy for her, Miriena told Luke, "Ranzam is very gentle and Luke, you are also gentle-hearted to feel sympathy for him. But remember, everybody have their own desire... their love, and no one can take them away. I hope you to tell him what you love." Luke accepted Mirina's request, and watching at them, Gourry said to Lina, "you have friends who will share your burden." Luke handed Lina a bag of gems. Those gems were magical items which Luke had made. Each gems sealed one spell and when it touched the target the spell would work. They were the magical bombs. Zelgadiss was surprised that Luke's skill of magic and magical power, and wondered what the man was. Noa asked Miriena, "is it okay for you let Lina use those gems? You know that the gems are symbols of his love to you..." Miriena smiled, "I already got more precious treasure from him." "Yes, everybody has his only one precious thing. And when he loses it, nobody can get it back from others because others don't have his thing. Therefore, let's us go to open his eyes." Lina and her friends except Noa went down to the basement of the chapel where they were confronted with a monster with a deformed shape resemble to Ranzam standing in the center of the magic circle.
Besides, Noa went to the village and drew her short sword before the eyes of Lulu. Lulu was frightened but she said, "please don't harm the villagers! If you want to stab someone, just stab me, but leave the villagers!" Noa dropped her sword, weaping. "I thought that you changed the village. But I wan wrong. You have come alive again and again, and everytime you are confronted with the pirates, you give yourself to them in order to save the village. You are so good..."

The monster in the basement was the alter ego of the priest Ranzam. It had pentacles on each fingers of its hands. Each peantacles were installed one magic spell, and attacked the targets touching them and releasing the spells. The walls and the floor of the basement were installed the deffensive spells, and the monster also toughed them with the pentacles to make those spells work. Zelgadiss and Luke knocked away the pentacles of the spell with their swords. Amelia used Visfarank to kock away the pentacles. Lina obserbed the pentacles to see which spell those pentacles were installed. And then she used the suitable magical gems to cancel out the effect of the spells. The monster cried out Ranzam's anger. "Lulu was sold when she was a child! Many people sold and bought her like a handy tool! Still she doesn't forget to love the people! Why? Why the world doesn't love her? It's because Lulu's life is cursed! Just like your gems are cursed to bring spells! Both Lulu and gems shall be gone after they completed their jobs in the world! Pity gems! If they weren't cursed, people would love them and they would live long for ages!" Lina shouted, "be aware! You are same as the world to curse the world and throw us into a peril!"
Luke said to Lina, "go ahead! Ranzam has to be closer to the center of this magical device!" Gourry broke one window from where he felt a threatening feeling came. Lina, Gourry, Amelia and Zelgadiss jumped down the hole outside of the window. On the botom of the hole, there was a magci circle, and near the center of it, Ranzam stood - no his legs had turned into the roots and he took root in the magic circle making him to be a part of magic itself.

 | Amelia gave her fist at Ranzam and he protected himself with another spell. Amelia wept and said, "I see that you love her so much. I believe that those who can love another person aren't be evil. So, please don't turn your eyes from the distorted world! Stop all of this, please!"

| Ranzam refused her, "nobody can fell the pain of another. You can't understand my pain at all!" Ranzam's spell attacked Amelia, but Zelgadiss stood before her to protect her from the spell. He said to Ranzam, "I thought just like you some years ago. But there are a lot of guys who show me something interesting. Why don't you raom around the world? There are many paths you can choose." |  |

During the battle, Lina thought. "I can't cast my spell from this distance. Let others attack Ranzam with thier weapons and fists until they can make time and space for me to get closer to Ranzam. Then, I will be able to touch him and cast my spell directly... I have to protect myself against the spells by those magic gems." But there came an enexpected spell - Gaav Flare. Gaav had been destroyed and it was impossible for ordinary magic users to use that spell. She realized that Xelloss wanted to make it clear if it was possible for someone to use the spell which drew the power of a destroyed Mazoku sub-lord in the special area in the island. Lina couldn't protect it and she saw that Ranzam was ready to cast a spell again. When she almost gave up, Gourry stood before her, and she realized that it wasn't the time to give up.

 | Besides, the monster in the basement used the similar spell at Miriena and Luke knocked the spell away by his sword. Luke was sure that the monster could use the power of the dark lord and it drew the power of five Mazoku sub-lords through the power of the dark lord. Then the leader of the masked soldiers came and attacked Miriena, but he was beheaded by the alter ego of Ranzam. It spoke the words of Ranzam, "I let him ressurect to make him pay the price... I let him guard the village, but this bad guy kept being bad even when his memories were changed. The time ease our pain, but the time can't clean up the dirtiness of this world. Therefore I hope to stop the time and leave the dirty world out." Luke said to Ranzam, "I understand what you want to say. I myself know well that the bad guys won't be changed at all. Still I won't give up to live in the dirty world, because my love keep telling me to live. That's all. Now tell me, what does your love tell you?" |
On the bottom of the hole of magic, Lina came closer to Ranzam and attacked him with the power of Ruby Eye adding the magic gems with the power of Mazoku sub-lords. She expected that the united power of those six powerful Mazoku would overwhelm the power of Ranzam's magic and break the barrier which stood between she and Ranzam.
In the basement, Luke made up his mind to use the power of Ruby Eye as well, because the magic of Ranzam used the power of the dark lord. "Which does the dark lord chose, you or me? Let's make a bet!" Ranzam's pentacles attacked Luke with Dragon Slave and Luke attacked Ranzam with the Ruby Eye Blade. And Luke's sword stabbed through the belly of the monster. Luke whispered, "as I expected, Ruby Eye chose me... I celebrate you not to be chosen by the dark lord..."

At the same time, Ranzam felt agony and Lina got a chance to attack him directly. But the distance was too far for her hesitating hand. Then, Gourry held her in his arm, saying "I told you. You have friends who will share your burden." And he threw his sword at Ranzam. It stabbed through the belly of the enemy.
Losing the source of power, the alter ego of Ranzam in the basement of chapel vanished. Luke sighed, "Lina put an end to true Ranzam at the same time. I expected she could if not I couldn't do such a dangerous attack." Miriena was anxious of his body because she knew that it was impossible for an ordinary human to survive the direct attack of Dragon Slave. Luke tried to smile, "the power of our love saved me, didn't it?" Miriena gave him a slap on his cheek and said, "you are what you are, and you aren't anything else." Luke thanked her.

 | In the center of the magicl circle on the bottom of the hole of magic, Ranzam was dying, but he reached out his hand to the hourglass in the center of the magic circle. Lina undestood that the hourglass was the core of his magic. She drew her short sword. "Don't touch the hourglass. If you do, I'll break both of the hourglass and your hand." Then there came Lulu and Noa. Lulu said to Ranzam, "I love this world Ranzam, because this world gave me the happiness to be loved by you. I hope to love you - the person who accepts me as what I am and is always gentle to what I love. Please don't harm this world which I love." And she held Ranzam in her arms. Ranzam said to Lina, "in order to release the world from this magic, we have to breah this space together with the core of the magic. It's only one solution. Would you please do it?" Lina put her had on the hourglass, but she felt that it was too heavy to put an end to this magic. Ranzam's magic affected the space but Lina and her friends weren't affected at all. Lina knew that Ranzam had hoped to stop the magic deep in his heart. It was too heavy for her to break the happiness of such good persons. Then Gourry put his hand on Lina's gently. "You keep pressing your burden on me, don't you?" "... idiot." Lina whispered and she cast a Ragna Blade to break the hourglass.
The village was free from the magic and came back in the world. Those dead villagers disappeared and the chapel was gone. Noa buried the bodies of Ranzam and Lulu on the cliff where they could see the sea and the village.

Lina talked with Xelloss about the magic of Ranzam. He explained that the sands in the hourglass were the tiny pieces of Demon Blood. Ranzam found the sands of Demon Blood in the earth of the island and used it. "I'm surprised that there is a magic user who has the skill to use the characteristics of this area and the sands of Demon Blood together."
