Background Information
In late August 2000 the party's leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi attempted to leave the capital city to meet with members of her party in Dallah townsip. Authorities had blocked her route by setting up roadblocks, and she and others spent several days at the roadside, waiting for authorities to allow her to pass.
In early September she and other senior party officials were forcibly removed by riot police, returned to the capital and held incommunicado. The NLD put out a statement on 12 Sep 2000, known as the NLD members' statement, in which they stated that the political role of the National League for Democracy enhanced national unity and solidarity, and called on authorities to lift restrictions on the leaders and the party, including by reopening the party's headquarters.
U Saw Naing Naing and others were subsequently arrested on 13 or 14 Sep 2000. They were detained incommunicado and sentenced in a military tribunal within Insein Prison to lengthy prison terms, under ligislation that is habitually used to penalize peaceful dissent with imprisonment.
It is believed that Saw Naing Naing and U Soe Han were sentenced on account of their prominent role within the National League for Democracy, and for their part in issuing the NLD members statement.
