Welcome to Akita Prefectural Museum!


museum The Akita Prefectural Museum is a general museum, which opened in 1975. We have 5 main exhibition rooms in the main buildings. Also, an old farmhouse is open to the public as the attached facility. Our exhibitions show Akita's nature, history, culture, and much more. Please take a time and enjoy your visit.




Human History Exhibition Hall

This hall exhibits many valuable materials in Akita's history. You can learn people's way of life in Akita through watching the materials and the reproductions of the house of Jomon period and the typical store in the Edo period.

Natural History Exhibition Hall

This hall introduces the abundant nature of Akita Prefecture.
It consists of the Geological Part and the Biological Part.
There are approximately 7,000 specimens of the real things such as fine specimens enclosed with acrylic resin, specimen frames of huge animals, and so on.

Hands-on Experience Room

In the Hands-on Experience Room you can try various activities with the things in the "Treasure Boxes."
There are about 80 Treasure Boxes with four different colors : yellow, red, blue, and green. Each box has different things. You can choose and try any of them, following the direction in each box.

Memorial Hall of Akita's Pioneers

This hall introduces the Akita's pioneers who have played important roles at home and aboad in the last 130 years.

Sugae Masumi Exhibition Center

Sugae Masumi (1754? - 1829) wrote many books with his own illustrations about nature and people's way of life in Akita in the late Edo period. This exhibition center introduces his various achievements.

The Old Nara Family House
- A branch of Akita Prefectural Museum -


The Old Nara family house is one of the biggest farmhouses about 1 km away from the main building of Akita Prefectural Museum.
It was built approximately 250 years ago, in the middle of the Edo Period. It helps us to see the old way of life of farmers, including the maya where horses and cows were kept, and the doma which was used as a workroom.

 By Train 20-minute walk from Oiwake Station on the JR Oga LIne or the Ouu Main Line.
 By Car Approximately 10 minutes from Showa-Oga Interchange on the Akita Expressway.
