a squeeze / a squeeze play
An offensive play in which the batter attempts to score the
runner
on third base by bunting neatly to avoid or delay a play at
the plate.
It is usually attempted with less than two outs.

日本で"スクイズ"というと、無死または一死で三塁ランナーが投球と
同時にスタートを切ってホームに突入、バッターはとにかく来た球を
バントで前に転がして三塁ランナーを生還させる、という意味で使われ
ますが、このプレーは英語で a suicide squeeze といいます。
a suicide squeeze
A squeeze play in which the runner on third base breaks for
the
plate with the pitch as the batter attempts to lay down a bunt.
If the bunt is unsuccessful, the runner is almost always out,
a "suicide."
(三塁ランナーが投球と同時にホームに突入し、打者がバントをするプレー。
バントが失敗すると、そのランナーはあたかも"suicide(自殺)"するように
ボールを持っている捕手に向かって行き、アウトになる)
ただし、実際の実況ではこの suicide の部分がよく省略されて、
a suicide squeeze が単に a squeeze と呼ばれることもあります。

(打者がバントをして、三塁ランナーがホームに突入するプレー、ただし、
そのバントがうまくいったときに限り、そのランナーはホームに向かう)
つまり、三塁ランナーは、ボールの転がり具合を見て、"これは行ける"と思ったと
きだけホームに突入するのです。a suicide squeeze に比べると、三塁ランナー
にとっては"安全"なのです。だから a safety squeeze といいます。
バントする側が safety なのではありません。
(ちなみに、safety bunt という英語はありません。)
Today's sentence で紹介したプレーは、この safety squeeze play の
ひとつです。
