the go-ahead run.

■Translation
Coco Crisp(Clevelandの外野手)は Gordon の初球、二塁手
Enrique Wilsonの方向に転がす巧みなバントをした。
意表をつかれたWilsonは、打球をさばいて一塁手John Olerud
に送球するも、Crispのヘッドスライディングの方が早く、
（三塁走者の）Blakeを生還させ勝ち越しに成功した。

＊to beat out the throw の the throw は例文のようによく it
に置き換えられ、to beat it out のように表現されます。
■Extra Innings
今回から７号に渡って、"ＭＬＢ７つのUNWRITTEN RULES"と題して、
公式ルールブックには掲載されていないメジャーリーグではタブー
とされている、いわゆる"暗黙のルール"(UNWRITTEN RULES)につい
て紹介していきたいと思います。非公式のルールですので、賛否両
論があるかと思いますが、一般的にもっともよく知られているもの
をピックアップしました。今回はその第１回目です。
[ＭＬＢ７つのUNWRITTEN RULES 〜その１〜]
◆Never steal a base when your team is way ahead
late in a game.
味方が圧倒的にリードしている試合の終盤で盗塁をするべからず。
○さてこのリードというのは何点くらいのことを指すのでしょうか。
これは特に何点差以上というのはなく、とにかく選手達にとって
は「試合の空気を読む」しかないのです。
○このUNWRITTEN RULE に関する有名なエピソードをひとつ紹介
します。2001年8月、Milwaukee Brewers vs. San Diego Padres
の試合で、Padresが12-5と大きくリードした７回、Padresの
Rickey Hendersonが二盗すると、Brewersの監督Davey Lopes
がベンチから飛び出しHendersonを叱責、さらに「次の打席で
ぶつけてやる」とHendersonを脅したという出来事がありまし
た。試合後Lopes監督は、"One of baseball's 'unwritten
rules' was breached by Henderson." とコメントしています。
