The new 5-day color workshop has finished successfully . The first day began with a talk about the history of color theory, which stretches back thousands of years and includes some of the greatest thinkers in history, like Aristotle, Newton, and Da Vinci. The students made their own color wheel which was the first time any of them had made one, much to my surprise. After a few simple color exercises they were ready to begin a project which teaches them the practical application of color theory through the process of mixing their own colors. You can see some of the students working on their projects below. As the students learned about how to find colors in other colors, they sometimes shrieked with amazement. One woman was shocked to discover that navy blue is made from a mixture of blue and orange. Everyone was surprised by the color beige. It has so many colors in it and isn't at all what they expected. They worked on this project for 3 days.

On the 4th and 5th day, everyone painted a still life and learned about the effects of grounds, complements, and reflected color as well. Here are their masterpieces below.

None of the students had used paint since they were children and had never painted a still life before. They said that the drawing workshop had taught them to see details and negative space, but the color workshop taught them to see even more. Now they can mix any color they want in order to match anything at all that they want to paint. All they have to do now is work on refining their painting techniques.
