Her Words
The good news is that you don't need to become an artist - because you were born one. Now you just get to nourish the artist in you. The bad news is that this truth often resists acceptance, even in the face of irrefutable proof.
It was a classic case, indeed. The artist within the child stirs, but alas, to the child's great frustration, only the crudest of stick figures tumble onto the paper. Then, one day, decades (and not a single portrait) later, the grown up child takes the 5-day Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workshop and, quite magically, the hand she draws really looks like a hand, and not grotesque pieces of driftwood. And this was only Day 1. Now even portraits are emerging of the people I love, and love drawing.
I cannot tell you exactly what happened during the 5-day course, i.e. what it is that takes you from stick figures to recognizable images, but it's like riding a bicycle - once it gets inside, you never really forget. Miracles happen between the "before" and "after" drawings. The beauty and joy of it is that there's no wrong way, contrary to what your school teachers or parents told you. Fear of failure AND fear of success, and wanting to do it right, will be constant companions. Just recognize this and get one with it.
There is a kind of quiet exhilaration about creating something from nothing, about seeing an eye or a hand where there had only been a blank white spot just a few moments before. Moles become beautiful. The deeper the wrinkles, the better. A fellow student, Marion Zobroski, said, "Just one line can take you inside whatever you are drawing!"
Right brain drawing is about putting who you are into the drawing. Surely we owe ourselves the gift!
