About the 5-Day Workshop

1st Day  Students are always a bit nervous on the first day. They bashfully bring in their pre-instruction drawings which I collect. They won't see them again until the end of the last day, when much to their surprise, they realize completely how much progress they made. Sometimes they don't even recognize their own pre-instruction drawings.

We do a number of drawing exercises, for example upside down drawings and contour drawings, to help them make the shift from their left brain to their right brain. For some students it's a completely new experience and they may get sleepy or even get a headache. They end Day One with a drawing of their own hand. Even at the end of the first day they have made a lot of progress, although they may not realize it yet.

2nd Day This day is devoted to drawing air, that is, the empty space around the objects, instead of the objects themselves. By drawing the empty spaces, which have no names, students are able to free themselves of the habit of drawing left brain symbols of objects. They begin to really see in a new way. Many times on their way home on the 2nd day, students miss their stop on the train because they have been so engrossed in looking at all the interesting negative space around them.

Here is one scene from the 2nd day of the November workshop (Nov. 2nd). The students are beginning to learn about negative space, as well as using light and shadow, by drawing their hands on a graphite ground.

3rd Day The 3rd day is devoted to proportion and the relationship of angles. Students learn simple one-point perspective and drawing a room corner. On this day they have to use both sides of their brain. Some people are quite happy to return to their left brain state, but others have become comfortable in the right brain state and find it a shock that they have to use the left side again.

.3rd Day

Here are some students totally concentrated on their drawings of a room corner on day 3 of the 5-day drawing course at the Olympic Center in Tokyo,. Several visitors dropped by to watch, including a man from Malaysia and another from Singapore.

4th Day  On this day the students draw each other's profiles. When you draw another person you can't help but become friends because you see them in a new way. The students are surprised that many of the things they learned about drawing a room corner, also apply to drawing a face. Each day builds on the day before it.

5th Day The last day is self-portrait day. Mirrors and lights are set up and each person spends about 4 or 5 hours drawing his or her own face. Some people just jump right in, but for others it can be quite an intimidating. experience. Sometimes a student will make great progress for the first four days and then get stage fright on the last day. Other times a student doesn't seem to make very much progress the first four days and then produces a veritable masterpiece on the last day. In any case, everyone is very happy to celebrate at the party afterwards and to admire everyone's work.
