The Shoso-in Treasure
y Cypress Bedstead z Length 237.0cm, width 119cm, height 38.5cm
This four-legged rectangular bedstead is made from Japanese cypress wood.
Its frame is fitted with long slats in a simple but sturdy design. Traces of white pigment
remain on the legs and body. This bedstead and another in the Shoso-in of similar design are thought
to have been used by the Emperor Shomu and Empress Komyo. This bedstead is a rare extant example of
furniture that was actually used in daily life.
