Deer in Nara have been treated favourably as the mission of God, and inhabited there since the 8th century.

Because the Fujiwara clan, which made special efforts to transfer the capital to Nara in 710, invited the God from Kajima ( now called g Ibaragi Prefecture h) in order to pray to the God for stability and safety of this city around 768, when the God appeared riding on a white deer.

According to the latest research, the number of deer in Nara Park is around 1,155, and male and female are in the ratio of 1 to 3.
Male deer can live to be 10, and female to be 15. The good condition of Nara Park promotes long life for the deer.

Every year about 200 fawns are born, and about 200 old deer die. They should not be given candy nor cookies, and we should avoid dumping vinyl because it can cause death.
The deer in Nara are so friendly that we can come quite close to them. Now they are a natural monument.
