The Shoso-in Treasure

y Screen Panel with Design of a Lady Decorated with Bird's Feathers zHeight, 136.2cm

This is a part of the six-panel folding screen depicting a beauty with full coiffure sitting on a rock under a tree. This screen, listed in the Dedicatory Record, was probably used at the palace during the reign of the Emperor Shomu.

The face and posture closely resembles those of the Chinese three-color glazed clay figurines excavated from Tang tombs. It is presumed that the pictures were finished by sticking bird feathers on its every outlined portion, but they are now all but gone, leaving only the bare outlines in ink and tiny fragments of feather on the white foundation.

This picture is depicting the prevailing idea of beauty in ancient orient, and is considered the most valuable examples of Japanese painting under the direct influence of Chinese Tang style.
