y The North Octagonal Hall (Hokuen-do Hall) z

The first Hokuen-do Hall was built in 721 by the Emperor Gensho for the repose of the soul of Fujiwarano Fuhito. It was subsequently reduced to ashes by three fires in 1049, 1090 and 1194, and the present building was reconstructed in 1208. Even so, it ranks with the three-story Pagoda as one of the two oldest surviving buildings of the Kofuku-ji Temple.
