The Shoso-in Treasure

The sho is a wind instrument used in Japanese court music. Unlike melodic hichiriki
and yokobue flutes, the sho functions more as a harmonic instrument. This example has a
pipe-shaped mouthpiece and air chanmber of black-lacquered wood, into which are set seventeen
pipes of black bamboo, belted with a strip of the same material.
