y The Tegai-mon Gate z
Originally, the Todai-ji Temple had seven
gates. There have been wars, fires and
so on, and only one gate remains original.
It is the Tegai-mon Gate.
The Tegai-mon Gate has eight pillars and
its length from east to west is 7 meters,
and from south to north is 11 meters. This
was built when the Todai-ji Temple was
constructed. Although this was repaired
after fires, this is the valuable gate of
mid-8th century.
The name ofeTegaifis derived from the
religious service of the same name,
because the secred palanquin is used in this
ceremony, and it starts from this gate.
This event is held in the Tamuke-yama-hachimangu
Shrine on October 5th.
In the middle of this gate are the four
stones on which the palanquin is placed.
