y Unification of Shintoism and Buddhism z

The introduction of Buddhism had been
strongly opposed by consrevative Shintoists.
Yet because Prince Shotoku devotedly supported
this foreign religion, it took the
same status as Shinto. Buddha and Kami,
the Japanese indigenous gods, were enshrined
in different places at first. But people
began to consider Kami to be protectors
of Buddhism, and eventually Kami was also
placed in temples to guard Buddhim.
