Outline of the Calligraphy

1. About the calligraphy

I want to enjoy calligraphy, syodo in Japanese, with you. 'Calligraphy' is said as the 'syodo' in Japanese. Do you know anything about syodo ?
Calligraphy, syodo ,is the visual art of writing Chinese and Japanese characters with writing
brushes, fude, in India ink, sumi. syodo has long been regarded as an object of esthetic appreciation. It has been
an important item of education since Chinese characters were introduced
to Japan in the ninth century. syodo is different from other kinds of arts. For example, in syodo not drawing but writing is required.
White and black are fundamental to syodo. When we practice syodo, we must always observe the stroke order of a character, kanji. Practicing
syodo helps us to develop mental concentration. Before a pencil and a pen were
introduced into Japan, writing brush and India ink were only writing implements.
It is true that syodo doesn't play more important role in our daily life than before. But even
now writings with fude and in sumi are often seen on signboards and book jackets and so on.
2. How to use the Implements for calligraphy
I am going to explain tools that you use to practice writing calligraphy.
Let's put them on your desk and get ready to write.
- Set a felt sheet
- Put an inkstone at the right side of the felt sheet.
- Set your writing brush at the right side of the inkstone's.
- Put a sheet of Japanese paper for calligraphy on the felt sheet.
- Put a paperweight on the paper.
- Pour some water into the inkstone.
- Rub the ink stick against the inkstone, using water just
a little at a time. Then the water will become black gradually.
When it turns black, you are ready. Has it become black ?
- Please take care not to get your dress dirty with ink(sumi). Because it is certainly difficult to wash off the ink.
- Please go on rubbing it until it turns black.
3. Style of handwriting
Writing style in syodo. We have many kinds of styles in writing Japanese language. They are kaisyo
style, gyosyo style, sosyo style, reisyo style, tensyo style, hiragana,
katakana and Romaji (Roman Alphabet). For example, we can write our names
in many kinds of styles.
