T5 set
In 2000, JR Central developed class 923 in order to replace superannuated class 921/922 used as a high-speed track and overhead feeder line inspection train for the Tokaido-Santo Shinkansen. The maximum speed is 270 km/h.
It is based on the production 700 series design. The nose section profile is same as that of 700 series. Class 923's bodies are made of Aluminum alloy hollow extrusions such as 700 series. Although class 921 track inspection vehicle is equipped with 3 trailer bogies, a track inspection vehicle located at car's No. 4 is equipped with 2 trailer bogies. The other vehicles are motored. Although class 923 adopt TDT204 for motored vehicles such as 700 series, a track inspection vehicle adopts TTR8001 equipped with 2 anti-yaw dampers and inspection devices.
Although class 923 have been used together with class 921/922 owned by JR West, JR west built class 923 in 2005, since class 921/922 can't be operated because of the overcrowded train schedule of the Tokaido Shinkansen. Class 923 built by JR West are classified into -3000 sub-class. Although 700 series owned by JR West adopt the different bogies from JR Central, class 923-3000 adopt the same bogies as those of class 923-0. Motored bogies are WDT206 and trailer bogies are WTR8001.
