N700 series are the next generation train for Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen
developed by JR Central and JR West. Their mass-production units began
to be built from 2007. N700 series vehicles will have the same maximum
service speed, which is 270 km/h on the Tokaido Shinkansen and 300 km/h
on the Sanyo Shinkansen, as 500 series vehicles.
Vehicle bodies can be tilted by up to 1 degree using air suspension to enable maximum operating speeds of 270km/h on the Tokaido Shinkansen, when traveling at 2,500m radius curve. Acceleration performance is also improved up to 2.6km/h/s that is same as the standard commuter train.
N700 series adopt 14M-2T unit to realize 300km/h operation on the Sanyo
Shinkansen. AC traction motored rated at 305kW were driven by 3-step IGBT
(Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) inverter reaction system. Motored vehicles
incorporate an AC regenerative braking system. Eddy current braking, which
trailer vehicles are equipped with, are discontinued by covering with effective
regenerative braking of motored vehicles. Advanced nose shape, and low
noise single-arm pantograph with redesigned insulator covers will reduce
the environmental noise.
The double-skin aluminum construction incorporated into the vehicle design
for light weight achieves both silent cabin room and lower cost. The extended
10.7m long nose sections are employed to reduce the noise, compared with
9.2m on the 700 series. All bogies feature continuous variable semi-active
dumpers for improved riding comfort. The body tilting system realizes 270km/h
speed at 2,500m radius curve by tilting at 1 degree. Fully streamlined
diaphragm covers will be used between cars.
Interior layout and accommodation is very similar to that of 300 series or 700 series in the standard layout of 2+2 seating in first class, and 2+3 in standard class. Seat pitch is same as on the 700 series vehicles with 1040mm in standard class and 1160mm in first class. All seats except the B seats have been widened by an additional 10 mm than 700 series. Segregated smoking compartments were prepared to cars 3, 7, 10 and 15 to make all seating accommodation no-smoking. All first class seating and standard seating at the ends of each car and at window side have power supply outlets for mobile PC users. Full color LED destination indicator panels are fitted on the side of the body instead of destination indicator screens adopted by 700-0 series.
N700 series entered Tokyo to Hakata NOZOMI services, displacing the 700
series trains used on these trains from 2007. |
