12. Wildlife of La Selva Biological Station

LOCATION:

  • North-eastern Costa Rica.
  • Caribbean Sea Side

ACCESS:

  • By bus from San Jose to Puerto Viejo, it takes about 1.5 hours.
  • From Puerto Viejo to La Selva by taxi, it takes about 15 min.

ACCOMMODATION:

  • La Selva is owned and operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), a nonprofit consortium of more than 50 universities and other educational institutions in the United States and Costa Rica. Refer to their home page: http://www.ots.ac.cr
  • There is an accommodation in the reserve for researchers. If you want to stay here, you had better make advance reservation through the OTS office in San Jose.

  • The OTS organize guided walks in the rain forest are led by well trained naturalist guides.
  • There are unbelievably numbers and spices of birds in this reserve. More than 420 spices of birds are found in this reserve. "A check-list of the Birds of La Selva" is sold at the shop in the reserve.

MAMMALS:→SEE NEXT PAGE

  • 120 spices of mammals are found in the reserve.
  • Lot of animals are observed around the accommodation area. For example, Collared peccary, Agouti, White-nosed Coati, sloths, Hawlar monkey, Spider monkey are seen frequently, and if you are lucky, you would see five spices of cats, armadillos, tapir and anteaters.

OTHERS:

  • Many kinds of frogs are seen in this reserve. Especially, Red-and-blue dart-frog is conspicuous.
  • More than 500 spices of butterflies including morphos are observed.
  • There are a lot of beautiful flowers including orchid.
  • You can feel huge primary forest.
