11. Wildlife of Tortuguero

National Park

LOCATION:

  • North-eastern Costa Rica.
  • Caribbean Sea Side

ACCESS:

  • By bus from San Jose to Moin, takes about 3 hours.
  • From Moin to Tortuguero by boat taking about 1 hr.

ACCOMMODATION:

  • There are some accommodations around Trtuguero.
  • Many tours from San Jose are organized. I recommend you to join thses tours because it is difficult to get here by yourself and to find accomodation.

  • The lodges organize boat safari and walking. A lot of water birds are observed around here, for example, Great Frigatebird, Brown Pelican, Anhinga, Olivaceous Cormorant, Snowy Egret, Great Egret, Little Blue-Heron, Green-backed Heron, Purple Gallinule, Northern Jacana, Spotted Sandpiper,etc.

OTHERS:

  • Howlar Monkey, Spider Monkey and Brown-throated three-toed sloth are often seen.
  • A lot of Red Poison Dart Frogs are observed in the forest.
  • Green Turtle (July to December) and Leatherback Turtle may be observed on the beach around here in the night.
