BIRDS:
- There are a lot of waterbirds along
the Tarcoles
river, and
also a lot of birds are observed
in mangrove. You can hire boats
at some lodges in Tarcoles.
-
Shorebirds and Seabirds are observed here,
for example, Brown Pelican, Anhinga, Wood Stork, White
Ibis,
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Tricolored
Heron, Little Blue Heron,
Boat-billed Heron, Bare-throated
Tiger-Heron, Green-backed Heron,
Black-necked Stilt, Ringed Kingfisher,
Green Kingfisher,
etc...
- Lots of forest birds are observed in Carara
Biological Reserve. But there are only a
few short trails in the reserve. Very difficult
to see forest birds and animals.
- Some of the birds species are unique, for
example,
Yellow-headed Caracara, Baird's Trogon, Fiery-billed
Aracari, Golden-naped Woodpecker, Red-crowned
Woodpecker, Scarlet Macaw,
etc...
- Especially, you can see Scarlet Macaws from
the bridge across the Tarcoles river in he
evening. They fry over your head to go back
to their roosts. Maybe this is the best way
to observe them. You can hear their voice
along the river side track, but very difficult
to see them.
MAMMALS:
- Not so many mammals are observed in this
area, but occasionally observed Puma along
the loop trail.
OTHERS:
- Lots of huge Crocodiles are observed in the
Tarcoles river from the bridge. And also
you can see feeding huge (jumping) crocodiles
from the boat.
