- This reserve is one of the most famous places for bird watching
in Costa Rica.
- There are a lot of mountain birds in the reserve. For examole;
Black Guan, Black-breasted Wood-Quail,
King Vulture, Chiriqui Quail-Dove, Mottled Owl, Green Violet-ear,
Violet Saberwing, Green-crowned Brilliant, Purple-throated Mountain-gem,
Coppery-headed Emerald, Resplendent Quetzal, Orange-bellied Trogon,
Blue-crowned Motmot, Emerald Toucanet, Ruddy Treerunner, Spotted-crowned
Woodcreeper, Three-wattled Bellbird, Slaty-backed Nightingale-Thrush,
Brown Jay, Three-striped Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, Wilson's
Warbler, Collared Redstart, Ovenbird, Spangled-cheeked Tanager,
White-eared Ground Sparrow, etc.
- Lots of hummingbirds are observed around nector feeder at
"Hummingbird Gallary" in the reserve.
- There are some other reserves near Monte Verde. Sta. Elena
Biological Reserve is also good for bird watching. Ecological
Farm near the butterfly garden and Bird Sunctuary near Sta. Elena
B.R. are private reserve, and they are also good for bird watching.
- You can employ guides at the lodges and the entrance of the
reserve. I recommend you to employ them, because they know very
well where is the good place to see Quezal and other special
birds.

MAMMALS:
- Mammals are also rich in this reserve. For example, Brown three- toed sloth, Hoffman's two-toed
sloth, White-throated capuchin, Mantled howler monkey, White-nosed
coati, Central American agouti are common.
- If you want to see coati and agouti closely, I recommend
to visit the Ecological Farm. About 9 AM, one of the staff feeds
them in front of their office.
- The reserve organizes night walk every night (You had better
make reservation through lodges.) If you are lucky, you will
observe some nocternal animals and birds.
