2. Wildlife of Tamarindo

LOCATION:

  • North-western part of Costa Rica.
  • At the base of Nicoya peninsula of the Pacific side.

ACCESS:

  • By bus from San Jose to Liberia.
  • By bus or taxi from Liberia.

ACCOMMODATION:

  • There are a lot of hotels and lodges around Playa Grande.

  • There are a lot of sea birds along the shore, and also a lot of birds are observed in mangrove. You can hire boats at the information or hotels in Tamarindo
  • Shorebirds and Seabirds are observed here, for example, Royal Tern, Franklin's Gull, Brown Pelican, Anhinga, Wood Stork, White Ibis, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Tricolored Heron, Little Blue Heron, Willet, Whimbel,etc...
  • Some of the birds spieces are unique, for example, White-fronted Parrot, Orange-fronted Parakeet, Black-headed Trogon, Hoffmann's Woodpecker,White-throated Magpie-Jay, etc...

MAMMALS:

  • Not so many mammals are observed this area, but Howler Monkeys are relatively easy to see.

OTHERS:

  • The coast of Tamarind is one of the famous nesting place of turtle (especially huge Leatherback). There are some organized tour for them from Tamarind, but it depends on the season. Maybe, late December is good season to observe Leatherback, because I saw some leatherbacks and a lot of their babies just hatched in this season. But taking photo is prohibited.
