The Jason Choy Memorial Scholarship
Meet the Winner!

Introducing Phuong Tran, recipient of the 2009 Jason Choy Memorial Scholarship.

Photo:Phuong Tran01Phuong will matriculate at the University of Maryland at College Park this fall, where she will major in international business, with the aim of later entering pharmacy school.

Phuong is a member of Future Business Leaders of America and the Junior Civitan club at ERHS, as well as a badminton enthusiast. She is also the oldest of four and – when not working one of her two jobs or studying to maintain her 3.70 GPA - often spends afternoons at home babysitting her younger brother, sister and baby sister. (Phuong is a busy high schooler indeed.) In her free time she enjoys hanging out with friends.

Phuong is also very interested in fashion and hopes one day to become a successful businesswoman. When asked where she sees herself in 10 years, she replied that (while working full-time as a pharmacist) she also plans to open and manage a small retail fashion shop on the side. Her education in international business should serve her well, as she plans to source her fashions from overseas designers. “It’s going to be challenging, but I think I can do it,” she says.

Phuong, the committee felt, stood out for her maturity and selflessness, both of which will serve her well in the future and embody the spirit of this scholarship.

We would like to congratulate her and wish her the best of luck in college and beyond.
