What is the Seishun 18 Kippu?
The Seishun 18 Kippu is a discount railways ticket offered by JR (Japan Railways) group. The JR transport network serves the whole country.

This ticket is available during spring, summer and winter seasons. You can get on only local trains and rapid trains with this ticket.

If you want to travel throughout the country, "Seishun 18 Kippu" is cheap and convenient!!

About Seishun 18 Kippu

Spring Sale period : February 20, 2012 to March 31, 2012
Validity period : March 1, 2012 to April 10, 2012

Validity period : July 20, 201- to Sep. 10, 201-

11,500 yen (Same price for adults and children)
!! Anyone can buy a ticket. When you buy a ticket, ID card or passport need not be shown.
!! A ticket for 5 days or 5 people. The cost would be only 2,300 yen per person (or per day). You can share it some friends.
!! The ticket cannot be refund. (If you started to use the ticket)
!! If you are not using a ticket, you can refund it at the JR ticket counters or travel agencies. (The cancellation fee is deducted)
Validity period of the ticket
(1-1) A ticket for 5 days or 5 people. This ticket can be used by 1 person for any 5 days of travel (consecutive or non-consecutive) or by a group traveling (up to 5 people) together on the same route.
(1-2-1) Each ticket (per day or person) is valid for one-day (From 0:00 to 24:00).
(1-2-2) However, when you exceed midnight (24:00) while you are getting on the train, ticket is valid till the first stop the train makes after midnight.
Moreover, you can get on till the last train in the Tokyo district and the Osaka district. When you exceed these areas and get on the train, the fare is necessary from the last station in the areas.
Specific JR lines in Tokyo area
From Yamanote Line to Toride, Omiya, Chiba, Chiba-minato, Ogimachi, Umishibaura, Ofuna, Kurihama, Takao, Musashi-Itsukaichi and Okutama.
Specific JR lines in Osaka area
From Osaka-Kanjo Line to Nishi-Akashi (Only Sanyo Line, except Wada-misaki), Sakurajima, Higashi-Hagoromo, Wakayama, Nara (Only Kansai Line), Nagao and Kyoto (Only Tokaido Line).
For example, you can enjoy following travels with a ticket.
When you use it with friends, you have to travel by same route as friends
(Ex.1) You can enjoy a 5-day trip for 1 person
(Ex.2) You can enjoy a 2-day trip with a friend and 1 day trip for 1 person

(1-1) JR local trains and rapid trains (non-reserved seats)
!! Rapid trains = Faster than local
!! Local = "Futsu", Rapid = "Kaisoku", Non-reserved seats = "Jiyu-seki"
(1-2) Exceptionally, JR limited express trains (non-reserved seats) between Kanita and Kikonai, and between Shin-Yubari and Shintoku
!! Because the local train is not operated in these sections
!! Note!! A part of limited express trains doesn't stop at Kanita and Shin-Yubari
!! Note!! The reserved seats and first-class seats cannot be used
!! Note!! You cannot get on the limited express trains by exceeding these sections

You get on the limited express trains (non-reserved seats) between Kanita and Kikonai The Seishun 18 kippu can be used.
You get on the limited express trains (non-reserved seats) between Kanita and Shiriuchi The Seishun 18 kippu can be used.
You get on the limited express trains (reserved seats) between Kanita and Kikonai The Seishun 18 kippu cannot be used.
You get on the limited express trains (non-reserved seats) between Kanita and Hakodate The Seishun 18 kippu cannot be used.
You get on the limited express trains (non-reserved seats) between Shin-Yubari and Shintoku The Seishun 18 kippu can be used.
(1-3) JR West ferry boat between Miyajima-guchi and Miyajima Island
!! Miyajima Island is the world cultural heritage
(1-4) Exceptionally, JR limited express trains (non-reserved seats) between Miyazaki and Miyazaki Airport
!! Note!! The reserved seats and first-class seats cannot be used
!! Note!! You cannot get on the limited express trains by exceeding this section
(1-5) Aoimori Railway (青い森鉄道) between Hachonohe and Aomori, between Hachinohe and Noheji, Between Noheji and Aomori.
However, you cannot stopover between Karibasawa Station and Higashi-Aomori Station, between Mutsu-Ichikawa Station and Chibiki Station by this ticket.
!! Note!! Aoimori Railway is not JR line
!! Note!! You cannot use this ticket between Metoki and Hachinohe
!! Note!! For example, if you use the Asamushi-onsen Station and Misawa Station ect., you cannot use this ticket
(2) Seishun 18 Kippu + other seat tickets (defferent rates)
(2-1) JR local trains and rapid trains (reserved seats)
!! The reserved seat ticket is necessary, it can be purchased at the JR ticket counters
!! Reserved seats = "Shitei-seki"
(2-2) JR local trains and rapid trains (non-reserved seats of first-class)
!! The non-reserved seat of first-class ticket is necessary, it can be purchased at the JR ticket counters or platform (Only JR East Tokyo area)
!! Non-reserved seats of first-class = "Green Car Jiyu-seki"
(2-3) JR liner trains
!! The liner ticket (or numbered ticket) is necessary, it can be purchased at the JR ticket counters or platform
!! Note!! The reserved seats of first-class cannot be used
(3) You CANNOT get on these types train bySeishun 18 Kippu
(3-1) JR super express trains, limited express trains and express trains
!! Super express trains = "Shinkansen"
(3-2) JR local trains and rapid trains (reserved seats of first-class)
(3-3) Railways of a third sector, private railways, subways, trams, monorails, etc.
!! When you get on the trains of these railway companies, you have to pay any fare for these railway companies
(3-4) JR buses


Using the Seishun 18 Kippu
When using the ticket for the first time, you present it at the manned ticket gate, and station staff affixes a date stamp in your ticket.
If you get on the train from an uninhabited station, the train conductor affixes a date stamp in your ticket.
!! Please do not write the date in the ticket by yourself.
!! If you get on the night rapid train, the train conductor affixes a new date stamp in your ticket.
You cannot use the automatic ticket gates with the ticket in the station. You have to pass throught the manned ticket gate and show the ticket to the station staff.

If you get on the night rapid trains...
Do you know the knack when you get on the night rapid trains? It is a way to preserve the validity period of the Seishun 18 Kippu.
If you do not use your ticket before midnight (0:00) yet, please buy the basic fare ticket valid till the first stop the night rapid train makes after midnight (0:00). If you do so, the train conductor affixes a new date stamp in your Seishun 18 Kippu.
Concrete example
If you get on the night rapid train "Moonlight Nagara" from Tokyo Station
Necessary tickets
(01) The basic fare ticket from Tokyo Station to Odawara Station = 1,450 yen
(02) Seishun 18 Kippu
(03) Reserved-seat ticket of night rapid train "Moonlight Nagara"

Please note business hours of the JR ticket counters or travel counters
The JR ticket counters and travel counters might be not open at early morning or midnight. Moreover, JR ticket counters of local stations might be not open on Saturdays or Sundays or Holidays.
Please buy the ticket beforehand when you start off on a journey at early morning or midnight.

Kind of rapid trains
These rapid trains (non-reserved seat) can be get on only with the Seishun 18 Kippu.
If you want to use the reserved-seats or non-reserved seats of first-class, you have to buy the ticket of these seats.
(Ex.1) "Kaisoku" 快速
Kaisoku = Rapid trains
(Ex.2) "Shin-Kaisoku" 新快速
Shin-Kaisoku = New rapid trains
(Ex.3) "Tokubetsu-Kaisoku" 特別快速
Tokubetsu-Kaisoku = Special rapid trains
(Ex.2) "Kukan-Kaisoku" 区間快速
Kukan-Kaisoku = Section rapid trains or Semi rapid trains

If you want to use the reserved seat, you have to buy the reserved seat ticket at the JR ticket counters or travel counters.

(Only Monday, Thesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Excluding holidays and day before of holidays)
(2) Other days = 510 yen
JR KYUSHU
(1) "Isaburo", "Shinpei", "Nanohana DX" and "Aso 1962"
(1-1) January 16 - February 28 (or 29), June 1 - July 19, Septemberand November 1 - December 20 = 300 yen
(1-2) Other days = 500 yen
(2) SL trains = 800 yen
(2) Other trains = 300 yen

If you bring the bicycle in to the trains...
You can bring the fold type bicycle in to the trains. Please store the bicycle in a special bag. Corkage is free (Excepting road race type's bicycle).
However, when the train is crowded, you might be refused to bring the bicycle in to the train. You must handle the bicycle with scrupulous care.

You cannot get on the trains of these companies
There are direct train services between JR and these railway companies. (Railways of a thier sector, private railways and subways)
However, you cannot get on the trains of these companies (railways of a thier sector, private railways and subways ) with the Seishun 18 Kippu.
