Rice-duck cultivation April
- May
This is not a result of our laziness. We
deliverately grow vetches to fertilize and
disinfect the land. |
Ducks have just arrived. They like bathing,
which makes a good practice to stir water
and move well in the paddy. |
They grow up eating weeds or unwanted insects
such as snails. |
We sow rice in flats and leave them in a
coldframe to sprout. When rice plants grow
big enough (four inches), we transplant them
to the paddy. |
We plant in low density, as few as one third
of plants compared to ordinary rice farmers.
This helps to make a lot of air passes through
the plants, to make the plants get plenty
of sun, and to make the plants become resistant
to insects or disease. |
