Encephalitozoon (Ez) is a protozoa under
microsporidia.
Symptoms ofEncephalitozoonosis (Ez-sis) in
rabbits include torticollis (head tilts),
ataxia, convulsions (fits), etc.
which are caused by Encephalitozooncuniculi infections primarily to the brain or kidney.
We have posted this site for providing detailed
information on the diagnosis
or treatment of Ez-sis, which has been little
known and is considered difficult to be clinically
diagnosed or incurable in Japan.

She was born on October 1st, 1996, mother
of two kittens. She was suffered from granulomatous uveitis (an eye disease) in October 1997. The symptom was in the last stage at the first medical examination. She has lost her sights; her eyeballs became smaller but her condition was stable. She may have been already infected with E cuniculi at that time. She started losing her weight around 1999. A head tilt was observed in April 2001. Her condition was improved without an aftereffect with the treatment with antibiotics, steroid and glycerol. A head tilt was observed again in September 2001. In addition to the above, diphenhydramine and DHA were added; her condition was improved. Opening of posterior limbs, difficulty in walking and a head tilt were observed in December 2001. The above treatment was given, but her posterior limbs stayed opened. Considering the possibility of Ez-sis, flubendazole was added to the above. She got well enough to jump by herself in a few days. Her weight, which had been losing for the last 2 and 1/2 years, has returned to its normal state. And now (May 2002) she is doing very fine without any relapse! |
