Jintyouge holds young
Buds waiting for spring to come;
While faintly they take
On a bit of color that
Tells us beginning of Spring!

| 浅き春濠に浮かべる水鳥に動くともなく春光遊ぶ |
| |
It's early spring: some
Water birds're afloat on the
Moat of Tamamo
Castle Park.. On them shining
The warm spring sun so brightly.
|
| 連翹の黄咲き揃ひ春暖の来りて嬉し散策の道 |
| |
It getting warmer
And warmer, spring is around
Us now. It brought the
Rengyou tree by the path of
My morning walk, in full bloom.

| 暖かき風上空に昨日今日はや杜の鳥動きはじめぬ |
| |
Warm wind high above
The forest in these days, and
The birds who live in
There have begun to tell us
"Spring! here; Hi everybody!"
|
| わが庭の躑躅数本白く咲くゆるり眺めむ留守居する間に |
| |
The white azalea
Has bloomed in my front garden.
One day I stayed home
Taking it easy and have
Enjoyed seing it all day!

| 去年の春社頭飾りし桜花今日の暖気に蕾見せそむ |
|
Year after year, as
Cherry blossoms adorning
Precincts everywhere.
The buds are also coming,
Helped by the warmth these days.
|
| 花梨咲く一輪二輪その時季のはや来たるかと立ち止まり見る |
| |
Karin in bloom,one.
And two: I stopped to see them.
On my way of stroll.
The time is spring now coming
So fast without our notice!

| 花冷えの今日は日曜讃岐なる丸亀城に桜花散り散る |

Sunday, not warm, I
Went to Marugame Castle
Park, climbing up to
Castle Tower ,on the way I
Was under falling blossoms
|
| 天守閣一人仰げば城濠に細く優しき春の雨降る |
| |
Sitting on a bench
Faced to the moat Tamamo!
In a light spring rain,
I'm looking up the Tower:
Then the past is with me now!
|
| 松籟の音も聞こえず花園の亭座し居れば雉子鳴くなり |
| |
Sitting in Hana-
Zono Tei in quietness
When I heard a call
Of a pheasant from nowhere
Which the origin of TANKA!

| 巡り来る春にあはせて今年また染井吉野が社頭を飾る |
|
Unfailingly, year
After year, spring after spring,
Cherry blossoms bloom;
Adorning the shrine with their
Beauty and divinity.
|
| 名も知らぬ雀ならざる野鳥の来て庭に遊べり木の芽膨らむ |

A wild bird playing
Merrily in my garden,
When buds are coming!
Telling me the seasn that
Spring is all around us now.

| 七夕と孫の来りて笹切りて喜び帰る今日は曇天 |
|
My grandson called me
Asking tiny bamboo branch
For celebration
Of 'Tana-Bata' . Getting it, he
Went home with satisfaction.

| 赤き橋下は水盛り上がる如鯉集まり来餌を投ぐるごと |

Over a red bridge
Seen, rising of pond
Water where many carp gathering
To get food thrown to them by
The visitors of the park.
|
| 向日葵の夏に打ち勝ち堂々と天指して咲く勢力の花 |
| |
Sunflower, endure
The heat of summer, and grow
Up straight to the sky.
Alone higher and higher:
Symbol of power for good.

| 暑さ又暑さと続く今日一日仕事に向ふ前に青空 |
| |
Sweltering heat, day
After day. Yet up early,
Under azure sky
I leave for work every day
Filled with great satisfaction.

| 鳴き染めしクマゼミの声高木の梢に響く碧空の下 |

Chorus of 'kuma-zemi'(a kind of cicadas)
Up big trees of the forest
It sounds and swallowed
In the blue sky of summer
Giving us vigor and hope.

| 宮居来て静けき雨に打たれつつ経巡る庭に紫陽花開く |
|
Visiting a shrine,
I went around the precincts
To see hydrangeas
In bloom under gentle rain:
A scenery of summer!
|
| この杜に梅雨を受けつつ咲き誇る紫陽花枝に短冊下がる |

In a drizzling rain,
Many hydrangeas in bloom.
From the twigs hanging
Pieces of paper(=tanzaku), tanka
having been witten on each.

| 紅葉に囲まれて立ちカンバスに向かふ老人笑み浮かべたり |

A senior citizen
In the park sits smiling at
His canvas contentedly.
Being surrounded by red
Leaves, waiting winter to come.

| 百鳥の声を聞きつつ遊歩道紅葉を賞す栗林の園 |

Seeing colored leaves
Of autumn and listening to
The "Chorus" of birds.
Taking a stroll in the Park
Ri-tsu-rin, full of red leaves

| 図書館の外に設くる駐車場掃き清め居る係員(ひと)心澄む |
| |
A person in charge, seen
Sweepingn a parking lot of
Library; a smile
On his face, under azure
Sky of autumn:pure mind.
|
| アキニレの並木の長き紅葉すどこまで続く晩秋飾り |
| |
A line of 'aki-nire'( a Chinese elm),
Leaves turned red run far away.
Decorating late
Autumn as if expect the
Beginning of snow winter.

| 黄葉の下の濠水濁りたる見る人々に凩吹かむ |
| |
Yellow leaves above,
A moat, the water impure;
How the visitors
Of the castle park killing time?
Against a cool autumn wind.

| 遊園地人来ぬときも生きて行く草木の上を秋霖過ぐる |

A park with a pond.
Seen raining yonder heavy.
Now it is around,
On the trees which have strong hopes
To live and to grow lonely!

| 重陽の今日は節句か若き日に菊酒汲みし友いま何処 |
| |
September the ninth:
Chrysanthemum festival;
In memory of
The day, we would drink with friends
Most of them now in Heaven!

| 寒鮒の味こそよけれ大根と味噌とで和へて冬の味食む |
|
In midwinter, I
Appreciate the cold,
Eating crucian mixed
With slices of radish, dressed
With miso and vinegar.
|
| 寒き日の中を孫たち訪ね来ぬ昼餉何せむ心悩ます |
| |
Against cold weather,
Grandchidren came to see me.
Chatting and eating;
What recipe would be the
Best for their relaxation!
|
| 強風下大寒近く冬の空晴るれど何故かこの身苦しき |
| |
Strong wind in winter;
Cold and strict yet it cleared up,
Which might mean bracing.
No; I feel like in some trouble
Knowing not the right reason!
|
| 中天にかかれる月の明るさに寒さ忘れて妻われ起こす |
| |
Late at night, my wife
Woke me up, finding the full
Moon shining brightly
Up in the sky. She kept the
Cold out of bay completely.
|
| 春の風やがて吹きなむ冬の風今は境内吹き通るとも |
| |
Spring wind expected
Come soon here to the precincts;
While in strict winter
Every day. Endure! until
Spring breeze will bring us flolwers.

| 霜降りて寒き暁鳥も居ず紅葉も散りし山裾の杜 |
|
The field covered with
Frost! In dawn no birds flying.
In the forests far
Away, all trees without leaves
Standing lonely in winter!

| みはるかす阿讃連峰白き衣脱がむともせず里寒き頃 |

Putting white coats on,
Yond seen the Asan Mountains.
As spring is not there,
In mountainous villages
Most people rest in their house.
|

| 消し忘れ夕餉の菜を買ひに出し台所電燈独り点れり |
|
I went out shopping.
And came back two hours later,
Noticing the lamp
Keeping lit in the kitchen.
I forgot to put it off!
|
| 今日こそと思ふ一日過ぎみれば為す事も無く夕暮迫る |
| |
A nice day would be,
Expecting morning and noon,
But in the evening,
It was just a common day,
As experience every day.
|
