TANKA

― Four Seasons in Japan ―
Last Update 2006.04.17

Introduction: Tanka (Japanese traditional poetry) began with "Manyoshyu"(Japanese oldest collection of poems). It was completed during the eighth century, containing about 4500 poems. Since then, Japanese have made these poems till today. Each poem has five lines which is composed of 5-7-5-7-7 syllables respectively.
What does tanka depict actually? It does changes of nature in four seasons. It also expresses, appreciating nature, our emotions in everyday life.

WINTER

After cold days, it's
Warm today. The heavy snow
In the districts north
They would expect that warm days,
Snowfall stopping, would come.

Warm weather makes me
Go outdoors and passing by
A calm grove I found
White flowers of a camel-
Lia greeting me.

Heard wild birds chirp. Where?
Seeing them nowhere. They might
Eeating nuts flying
Busily among tops of
Trees high up above singing.

Standing by a small
Garden various trees planted,
I found a 'sasanqua'
With red flowers in full bloom
Which made me gay with whatever reason.

a kind of camellias
grow on a mountain
"SASANQUA"
flowers of SASANQUAs

Putting up with cold、
Hard buds of daphnes I met
Them on my way of
A stroll, enduring the cold
Of winter, waiting for spring!
