A number of physical conditions , such as lobe-filling , provide natural restrictions on binary star configurations . These conditions are implemented in the WD program by allowing the specification of certain MODE of operation . Under each mode the program applies particular constraints among parameter values , except in mode 0 , which has no constraints . This results in values which are necessarily consistent with the assumed physical conditions . Mode 1 and 3 are intended for overcontact binaries , so the surface potentials of the two stars are required to be the same . Mode 3 permits a temperature discontinuity on the connecting neck , while mode 1 does not . Mode 2 is for detached binaries , with no constraints on potentials , but luminosities are required to be consistent with surface temperatures ( not the case in mode 0 ) . Mode 4 and 5 are for the semi-detached condition , with the potential of star 1 set to the lobe-filling value for mode 4 and that of star 2 set for lobe-filling in mode 5 . Mode 6 is for double-contact binaries , with the potentials of both star set for lobe-filling . Mode -1 is for eclipsing X-ray binaries , where the duration of eclipse is known from the X-ray observations , but there are no detectable optical eclipse . Solution of optical light curves as those of an ellipsoidal variable is constrained to be consistent with the known eclipse duration . The mode used for the light curves of each binary in the Pictorial Atlas is given in the list of references .
