Henna: Germinating Seeds
種を発芽させる

Henna seeds are small, brown, and triangular. I was amazed when I first
got mine-- never having seen a henna seed before, I was surprised by their
size. I have tried this technique several times at about a 95% success
rate. With this in mind, don't try to germinate too many at once as you
may end up with too many seedlings!

ヘナの種は小さくて、茶色で三角形です。それまでヘナの種を見た事がなかったので
すが、私が最初にヘナの種を手に入れた時はその小ささに驚きました。下記のような
方法で何度か種を蒔いて育てましたがその発芽率は95%くらいあります。あまり一度
に多くの種をまくと非常にたくさんのヘナの苗ができてしまいますので、気をつけて
ください。

I recommend that you store your seeds in an airtight and light-proof contain
er.ハ I keep mine in a empty Marmite jar-- black glass with a threaded plast
ic lid. First things you're going to need are a clear plastic bag (one that
you can seal firmly), and some paper towels.ハ What we are going to do here
is force germination by tricking the seeds into winter mode and then into sp
ring time (and germination) mode.

ヘナは、光が通らない密閉容器で保存するのがいい方法です。私はマーマタイト(*1)
の瓶---黒いガラスで出来ていて、ネジ式のプラスティックの蓋が付いている---にヘ
ナの種を入れています。

透明のプラスティック容器か厚いビニール袋（口がきちんと封ができるもの）とペー
パータオルを用意してください。
ここで何をやろうとしているかと言うと、つまり、ヘナの種に冬の季節を擬似的に経
験させてから、芽を出す春の季節の状態に持って行くことで、ヘナの種をだまして、
強制的に発芽させようということです。

Place the paper towels on a flat surface.ハ Youユre going to need to use sev
eral sheets to make it nice and thick and also strong. Sprinkle some cold wa
ter onto the sheets to make it wet-- you donユt want to soak it, though, as
it will fall apart when you try to pick it up.

平らな所にペーパータオルを置きます。何枚かシートを重ねると厚みができてしっか
りします。冷たい水をまいてシートを濡らしますが、あまりびしょびしょにすると持
ち上げる時にやぶれてしまいますので適度に濡らしてください。

Now get a pinch of seeds and sprinkle them along the paper towels,
creating a line of seeds down the middle. Now fold the sheets over,
trapping the seeds in the middle.

ペーパータオルの真ん中あたりに長手方向にそって線になるように、ヘナの種を指で
つまんで蒔きます。そのあと、ペーパータオルを二つ折りにして種を中央部分に閉じ
込める形にします。

Now you're going to need to place it in your plastic bag. Fold the paper
towels over as many times as necessary to get them to fit in the bag. Now
you should seal the bag as you need to keep the moisture inside it. The
stronger the seal, the better. Tying a big knot in the top is quite
effective, or even better if you can get a Ziploc bag.

その種をはさんだペーパータオルを何回か折りたたんで、密閉できる容器（袋）の中
にきちんと納まるようにして入れます。密閉容器（袋）に封をして中が湿度の高い状
態を保てるようにします。きちんと強く密閉します。上部に大きな結び目を作るのも
効果的ですし、ジップロックのような食品保存袋（容器）に入れるとなおいいです。

Now for the winter part. Place your seeds now encased in the bag in the
refrigerator. Now they are nice and cold thinking it's winter time . . .
lying dormant waiting for nice spring time weather to initiate
germination.

ヘナの種に冬の時期を過ごさせる為、この袋（容器）を冷蔵庫の中に入れます。冷蔵
庫の中は充分寒い状態なので、「今は冬だ・・・」とヘナの種は考えます。冷蔵庫の
中でじっと休眠して発芽の始まる春の季節を待ちます。


After three or four days, remove them from the refrigerator and place them
somewhere warm. You're now going to get the seeds to go into springtime
mode and start to germinate. It needs to be somewhere above room
temperature that can generate some condensation inside your plastic bag.
If your bag is not properly sealed, you're going to run into some
problems-- the heat will dry up your paper towels rather than producing
condensation and keeping them warm and moist, so make sure that it is
properly sealed.

３日か４日して冷蔵庫から取り出し、暖かい場所に置きます。そうすることによって
ヘナの種は「春の季節」を感じ、発芽を始めるようになります。室温より少し高めの
温度の場所に置いておきます。すると容器の中で発芽に向けての変化が起きてきます。
　容器がきちんと密閉されていないと、中のペーパータオルの水分が蒸発してしまい、
暖かくて高温多湿の状態に保つ事ができなくなり、発芽もできなくなりますので、く
れぐれもきちんと密閉されていることを確認してください。


Now leave the seeds for four days before going to check on them. Removing
from the bag carefully, unwrap the seeds and you should see white flecks
on the seeds. They are germinating. Wrap them back up and place them back
in the bag. Put them back in the warm spot for a few more days.

４日間はそのままの状態にしておいて、袋を開けて様子を見たりしないようにしてく
ださい。４日たったら注意深く容器を開けてペーパータオルをはがしてみます。発芽
していて、白い細いものが種から出ているのが見えるかと思います。そのまま取り出
さないで、元の状態に戻して、２、３日はその暖かい場所に置いておいてください。


I leave my seeds to grow until around 1cm long, at which point they are
easy to remove from the paper towels without any potential damage to
now-growing plants.

私は芽が１ｃｍくらいの長さになるまで置いておきます。そのくらいが、ちゃんと育っ
て行ける為に、ダメージもなくペーパータオルから移植できる時期だと思っています。


Now you can plant them. I place mine about 3cm apart in a shallow pot. At
this point, I also mix some sand into the soil. This is good for drainage
and I believe it is a more natural mixture. Place the soil into a pot.
Leave about 2cm from the top. Now gently place your little shoots inside
and then cover them, filling up the pot to the top.

この状態になれば、もう土に植えることができます。私は、浅い器に３ｃｍほど離し
て植えます。この時点で土に砂を少し混ぜます。これは水はけにいいのと、この方が
より自然な形だと思っています。

　器に上部から２ｃｍくらい残して土を入れます。その上にヘナの小さい苗を注意深
く置いて、その上から器のすり切りまで土をかけます。


I prefer to do this in a small shallow pot at first, as I like to keep
them warm by placing the pot near the heater.

Within a couple of days you will start to see the shoots breaking through
the top and starting to grow upward.

Now you're on your own . . . the best I have achieved in the UK is a plant
about 5cm tall.


　最初は、浅い小さな器に植えるのがいいでしょう。そして、それを暖房器の近くに
置いて暖めるのがいいでしょう。そうしていて１日、２日すると若い苗が土から出始
め、育ち始めます。こうなると自力で育っていきます。イギリスで育てた経験では、
５ｃｍ(*2)くらいの丈までが最高です。


(*1)トーストに塗るイギリスの健康食品でマルミットとも発音する。

(*2)これは、５ｍの間違いではないかと・・・。
