Clivia Society (an international group which is based in the
Republic of South Africa). In Japan, clivias have been considered
as a traditional pot plant, even though the origin was South
Africa. Japanese clivia enthusiasts appreciated mainly its leaves
because its total form looks like the Japanese foliage plant
Rohdea japonica. I can say that Mr. Nakamura is the first person
in Japan who has focused on breeding clivias with beautiful
flowers.
marvellous breeding results. VICO Yellow is a yellow Clivia miniata
with big round petals that was bred by Sir Peter Smithers. Sir
Peter Smithers actually gave this plant to Dr. Shuichi Hirao (a
Japanese horticulturist). After Dr. Hirao's death, Mr. Nakamura
obtained all of Dr. Hirao's clivia collection, including VICO Yellow.
Mr Nakamura has bred numerous excellent hybrids with good
flower shapes and colors by using VICO Yellow's pollen up until
now. In addition, his interest is not limited to clivia miniata, for he
has also bred unique interspecific hybrids by crossing the four
clivia species - Clivia miniata, Clivia caulescens, Clivia gardenii
and Clivia nobilis. Please check the images of his flowers below
and you will see that he has quite a wide range of interests in his
clivia breeding.
