Hellebores

Helleborus x snow white
(H. niger x H. orientalis)
bred by Yokoyama Nursery
in Japan
Family: Ranunculaceae Latin name: Helleborus
Height: 20-60cm Blooming season: Winter-Spring

Before, hellebores were not so popular in Japan because most of the
species did not grow well in Japanese hot and humid summer. In recent
years, Helleborus orientalis hybrids were brought from western countries
and they are quite stout plants. Since then, the population of hellebore
enthusiasts has become bigger ever year. Now, there are several
hellebore breeders in Japan. For example, Yokoyama Nursery bred
Helleborus x snow white and this cultivar is the first hybrid between
Helleborus niger and Helleborus orientalis. There are several hellebore
enthusiast groups too in Japan. Japan Helleborus Society (JHS) is one of
such enthusiast groups and the members are quite active about
introducing people to the world of hellebores. I went to their third
exhibition held at SHINJUKU Gyoen Garden in Tokyo on 27 February.
Most of the photos below were taken there.

Helleborus Species
Helleborus lividus is one of the popular species in Japan. This species is often on
sale at gardening shops in winter. I wonder if the reason why the Japanese lovs this
species is that its flower shape resembles Japanese plum flower.

Helleborus x ericsmithii is quite popular in Japan since this cultivar is a stout plant

Helleborus Hybrids at the Hellebore Exhibition 2005
held by The Japan Helleborus Society
The members of the Japan Helleborus Society (JHS) are enthusiastic for introducing
people to the charm of chic hellebore flowers. They import seeds from foreign
nurseries every year and exhibit new flowers at the exhibition for visitors. Now there
are about 400 members in JHS. They issue e-mail newsletters several times in a
year.
