Welcom to Kiritappu and Nemuro Region
This area is one of the best places for bird watching in Japan.
No-where in Japan is there such a range of bird habitats - forests, grasslands, wetlands, cliffs ,lakes and rivers- and all within a few miles. So far we've counted 300 species. We can observe some of the world's precious birds, for example Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis), Steller`s Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus), Blakiston's Fish Owl
(Ketupa blakistoni).
This area is the important habitats for waterfowls. Kiritappu-Shitsugen
is a Ramsar sites (wetland reserve for waterfowls) .Lake Furen and Shunkunitai,
and Notsuke Peninsula are registered as Ramsar sites for 2005.
Many varieties of birds, residents, summer visitors, transients, winter
visitors, are attracted this area by the changing season and the diverse
enviroment.

"Poroto House" runs a series of bird watching tours of the Kiritappu,
and also goes across to Kushiro-shitsugen,Nemuro and Notsuke Peninsula.
