洋書：まだ子供向けの本を読んでますか？

　　　　ペーパーバックや子供向けの本には、もう「うんざりだ」と感じている方のための洋書の紹介

　子供向けの本は、語彙も限られており、確かに読みやすい。私も、英語の勉強のためにと思い、これまでに何冊も読んできました。
　しかし、私が普段日本語で読む本は、小説や物語ではなく、ごくふつうのサラリーマンが読むようなたぐいのものであり、まして子供向けの本を読むことはまずありません。
　ですから、勉強のためと自分に言い聞かせて、読んできたものの、あまり興味が持てず、買ったまま読まずに本棚に入っているものも数多くあります。
　ところが、数年前、本屋である洋書をふと立ち読みしたことがきっかけとなって、それ以降は子供の本を読むことは一切やめてしまいました。
　その本は、リチャード・カールソンのDon't Sweat the Small Stuff（邦題「小さなことにくよくよするな」）でした。それ以前は、彼の名前も知りませんでしたし、翻訳書を手に取ったこともありませんでした。
　立ち読みして、数ページ読んでみると、英語もそれほど難しくなく、なかなかおもしろい内容で興味を引かれ、早速購入し、電子辞書のお世話になりながら、短期間のうちに読み終わってしまいました。読み終わってみると、子供向けの本を読んでいた時にはなかった充実感がありました。書いてあったことをすぐに即実践したわけではありませんでしたが、なかなか味わい深いことが書いてあって、世界中で翻訳され多くの人に読まれていることに納得しました。その後、彼の著書をすべて取り寄せ、新刊も含めてほとんど読んでしまいました。
　そして、彼の本の中で紹介されている本を次々に読んでいき、現在は、いつの間にかビジネス関連の本にまで興味が広がるようになりました。
　ビジネス書を読んでいて感じるのは、内容が自分に関連しており、興味が持てて飽きないということと、子供向けの本に負けないくらい英語が平易で理解しやすいということです。ビジネス書は３００ページを超えるようなものも多く、手にしただけで恐れをなしてしまう人も多いと思います。でも、実際には、中学とは言わないまでも、高校程度の英語が理解できれば十分に読みこなせるのです。
　そこで、子供向けの本に興味を持てない方のために、どんな本があるのか紹介してみたいと思います。英語を勉強している多くの社会人の方々の参考になればと考えています。

古典

自己啓発関連

　洋書を初めて読む社会人、または学生向けに、古典的なものから紹介したいと思います。
　デール・カーネギーやナポレオン・ヒルなどの著作は現在でも広く読まれており、古典と呼んでもよいと思います。邦訳もほとんどありますので、なるべく辞書に頼らず、辞書の代わりに、翻訳書をかたわらに置いて読んでみてください。
　それぞれの本にはアマゾンへのリンクを張っておきましたので、カスタマーレビュを参考にしながら、選んでみてください。アマゾンで書評が載ってない場合は、ホームページの一番下にある、アメリカやイギリスやカナダなどのアマゾンに行けば、だいたいありますので探してみてください。
