Economy of Sarllac
The soil and climate around the Sarllac allow the mixed arable farms to grow
a rich diversity of crops.Cereals and fodder crops are planted in strips
alongside fruit trees,and the Dordogne has also become the foremost producer
of strawberries in the country.
The rich alluvial soils of the Dordogne valley are ideal for growing tobacco
and the Regie Nationale des Tabacs,the State Tobacco Board,has taken over the
abbatial buildings in the town to use them as a depot and warehouse.Tobacco is
an important cash crops for the Dordogne farmer.
Many of houses in the town have been impeccably refurbished, and there is a wealth
of fine architectural detail to be seen.
The walnut trade still thrives;geese are still sold at the Saturday market
in the Place des Carenac;and the town has deservedly become one of the great
tourist atlractions of the Dordogne.
