The slopes surrounding the town are clad with serried rows of vines,for this is 
wine producing country.

  Most small farmers keep at least a few rows of vines,enough to provide a supply of 
wine for home consumption.

  Where the number of vines does not really call for the use of expensive machinery,
a farmer's neighbours will invariably offer to help with the grape-picking,
expecting nothing in return except help with their own harvest and perphaps a good supper.

  The wine produced from rows of vines will be domestic consumption,vin ordinaire,
but good-quality appellation controlee wines are produced in the departement
for both the home market and for export.
