Departure of 34 years old
Susumu Tanaka's
posthumous works exhibition

Susumu Tanaka
The new world of a contemporary art
I am a father of Susumu Tanaka.
Thank you for your visit to this page.
I think that my dead son also appreciates you, delighting from somwhere
in the universe.
Before his death, my son often told us as follows:
"I was as many people in the world as possible to be shown and enjoy
my art."
Although he was a talented painter admired as "a magician of colors" also
by the artcircles in France, regrettably he had to die so young of 34
years old.
I introduce a part of Susumu Tanaka's posthumous works to you.
It was photographed in March, 2003.
Three months before his death, he was drawing about twenty or more works
of the "Kamakura story"series for an exhibition of his pictures
in Kamakura.
Susumu Tanaka won the two titles in France which was his target
no less than 4 times by his twenties, but five years ago, in 2003,
since the brain tumor recurred, Susumu Tanaka went to Heaven
so young when he was 34 years of age.
Mr.Gerard KOCH, "SALON DE MAI" organization Committee member
came to the Four Artists Exhibition in Paris to meet Susumu Tanaka
for encouraging him and congratulations on his exhibit.
SALON DE MAI is representative group avant-garde artists in France
and ranks with "SALON D'AUTOMNE".

SALON D'AUTOMNE <An Exhibition in Autumn>
It means "an exhibition in autumn". It was established by Matisse,
Rounault
and others in 1903, resisting the coservativeness of the Le Salon exhibition.
And it became a base of birth of the fauvism or cubism which pursues an
avan-garde.
With 100 years' tradition, it had great influence on the fine-arts contests
in the world since its birth. It is said that thanks to SALON D'AUTOMNE
exhibition, Paris is called "capital of art" up tonow.
The exhibitiors who led the painting circles of France in the D'Automne
exhibition which is a gateway to the painter accepted in the world are
Picasso, Miro, Cezanne, Renoir, Modigliani, Braque, Utrillo, Vlaminck,
Aizpiri and others. The Japanese painters who appeared in great numbers
here are Tsuguharu Fujita, Yuzo Saeki, Hilo Yamagata, etc. Now, many works
seen in the famous art museums of every corner of the earth are produced
from here.

SALON DE MAI <An Exhibition in May>
It means "an exhibition in May". It was formed as one of the
resistance
culture movements against Germany in Paris in 1943 in the Second World
War. The first exhibition was held in 1945 after France was liberated.
Although a young generation of those days such as Pignion, Singer, Manesh,
Bazaine and others gathered friendly, aiming at the new trend of free fine
arts, it was not formed by a specific principle or a specific opinion.
There, the
works which have various tendencies and different styles and techniques
were
exhibited.
Although great masters such as Matisse, Rouault, Lautre, Villon and others
are also exhibited, SALON DE MAI is not a French organization. From Picasso
or Miro to Japanese painter such as Shiko Munakata, Taro Okamoto, and
Setsuko Migishi, the painting circles of Paris have continued sending the
message of contemporary art toward the world since Ecole de Paris in the
early stages of this century. However, in it,, SALON DE MAI was inevitably
intenationalized, in order to play an expansive role.
<The flower of the wind>
These two works, KAZA-HANA series works liken the wind that Susumu Tanaka
flows throught to flowers, and it is the work which it imaged.
This is the work which he pictured while postponing it with fingers while
dissolving
oil pastels by the heat of the dryer other than acrylic paints to show
the feeling
that wind spreads in.
Therefore it is the work which it poured passion into so that the fingerprint
of his
finger has disappeared.
I make selling in two works of pairs.

Kamakura Story <The message of the starlit sky>
F3size 22.0×27.3cm / acrylic on canvas
"Kamakura Story"is the last series work (20 works) which he drew
three months ago when Susumu Tanaka dies in march, 2003.
His solo exhibition was going to hold it in a gallery of Kamakura city
in June. He painted Kamakura Story in the solo exhibition to exhibit it.
However with the solo exhibition that he looked forward to close at hand,
he was not able to achieve the holding.
In next year , June, 2004, Susumu Tanaka Solo Exhibition was held for one
round mourning, his memorial service by his parents to realize his will
of the deceased.
It called a big reaction, and this posthumous work exhibition was taken
up much in mass communication.
He did not pass for one year since he move to Kamakura from Tokyo either,
but he loves sea and nature of Shonan, and it is it in work group influenced
by them, and a style of painting different from a conventional style is
felt.
The work of Susumu Tanaka called "The magician of the color"is bright, and it is said that a heart becomes calm.
He lets mismatch color to harmonize the combination of the color wonderfully.
It is said his work is a picture tasted deepens so that time passes and
wear well .
The impression of the people who appreciated works of Susumu Tanaka by
a posthumous work exhibition of Kamakura city...........
"My heart was washed away neatly without any regret and I was given
spirit by clean colors."
"I have you show the world of wonderful art and thank you and I was
impressed by the usage of beatiful colors of your works"
"Mr.Tanaka !! Please continue drawing splendid pictures in heaven"

It is a photograph with "Ms. Tanaka" who is the dearest partner.
(She was
always called as"Tar-Chan"). When Susumu Tanaka was 25-26 years
old, in his Suginami's atelier, he was drawing a picture. Then, a stray cat (female) jumped
into his room from the veranda of the second floor. She was a cat who well
understands Susumu's works. So, when her favorite work has completed, she
was delighted at it, rubbing her face against the angle of canvas repeatedly.
And, when a guest visited the atelier, she nestled up to the guest, wagging
her tail, and carried out sales promotion activities as if she says, "please
buy it, because it is a very good picture." So, she was such a beautiful
and intelligent cat. However, unfortunately, four months before Susumu's
death after the moving to Kamakura,
she became in the extreme anemia state, and had died by the illness which
the virus eats red corpuscles.
Susumu and his father visited Tar-Chan who is in a nearby animal hospital in the evening just before she dies. However, her condition was quite bad and gazing at one point by her hollow eye. When Susumu called her "Tar-Chan," she answered, straining her voice, "thank you very much for a long time."
When walking toward the Shichirigahama beach in February of twilight, the
sky of the Sagami Bay was wholly covered with colorful evening glow which
had not been seen ever. In a few hours, a veterinarian called and said
that she is in a critical condition. By the side of Tar-Chan's dead body
which was returned to his house, broken-hearted Susumu slept with her,
grasping her leg tightly all night long.
It was quite shocking to Susumu. Tar-Chan foreknew the death of Susumu,
and since she thought that she will not able to bear the sadness left alone,
she must have died first.
Furthermore, there was a strange thing. When cremating Tar-Chan's body at the Yokohama cemetery, Susumu said, "Tar-Chan" we will meet under a red tower. "What was a red tower?" In August, in the offing of the Zushi marina, when we dispersed Susumu's ashes from a cruiser, we found that the roof of the resort condominium of the marina is a red tiled roof in the Spain style. At this time, we understood that "the red tower" which Susumu said means this place. Did Susumu already have kown that this remaining days are not long?
A month later, Susumu's right brain swelled by the recurred edema, and
became afficted by headache. Since he took the steroid which is the medicine
to stop a swellnng, his swelling and headache were controlled. However,
instead of it, he had a sharp pain which feels as if the tongs which were
baked red-hot was applied in the inner part of his right eye. It is because
the affecting to the trigeminal nerve has recurred. Although he was hospitalized
in Tokyo and Kamakura in order to contorol the pain, his physical strength
significantly fell by the side effects of the painkiller. For this reason,
he became impossible to get up or to speak, and finally died.
In the Hanezawa Garden, Tokyo in March, 2003.This is a photograph when he
was invited to the marriage ceremony of Mr.K of the builder who is his
schoolmate of his high school days.
Although Susumu Tanaka was still single, he had said, "I also want
to hold a wedding ceremony in such a great facilities." He had taken
the cortex hormone agent to control the swelling, because the remained
tumor after the surgery has already recurred recently and a brain
has become swollen. Therefore, by the side effects, he had a good appetite,
and was considerably fat.
The picture of the background is a work the size of 116×91cm (MUSIC BOX
SERIES) which was shown in the private exhibition held in November (seven
months after the operation), 2002 (last year) at the GALLERIE ymA (the
art gallery which the wife of a writer, Mr.Akiyuki Nosaka, manages) in
Akasaka, Tokyo.
When he opened the private exhibition in Akasaka, he had commuted from
Kamakura-shi (Kanagawa prefecture) to Akasaka (Tokyo) by Yokosuka Line
vigorously every day. When the gallery was closed,he held a small party,
drank alcohol with his friends, and enjoyed himself. He had usually returned
to his house in about 1 hour using the last train of the day. However,
since he was getting dead drunk and slept in the train, he could not get
off at the Kamakura station. So, sometimes he might go to terminal Zushi.
After all, he used to often go home by taxi from there. After the completion
of this private exhibition in Tokyo, he finished drawing 30 works of "Kamakura
Story Series" as his posthumous work, and died on June 12. Just three
months later, afterthis photograph was taken, it happened.
Finally, this is the feelings which we rote to a letter of invitation that
we the husband and wife (father: Tsutomu Tanaka, mother: Mihoko Tanaka)
lost our son, and sent at the time of his-posthumous-work exhibition in
Kamakura.
In March, 2002, he was attacked by intense headache, and had received an
examination in the hospital in Tokyo. And a quite big tumor 6cm in diameter
was found in his right temporal lobe. The diagnosis was that his life expectancy
is in the dangerous state of being only several months, if he dosen't have
an operation.
For 14 hours, the extraction operation of the tumor which cuts his head was conducted. As a result, fortunately, there was no aftereffect, and he recovered favorably and left hospital in April.
But the doctor said: "Although I removed the big tumor in his right
brain, the tumor has spread around, attaching thinly. If it is also extracted,
he may become persistent vegetative state. So, I did not conduct the operation.
Probably, his disease will recur. I think that his life expectancy will
be only one year.A re-operation is impossible. Should I notify him about
that?" replied to him: "If he knew about it, he becomes desperate
and may commit suicide. So, please don't tell him about it. "After
all, I did not tell him about that to the last. However, we the husband
and wife had decided that we would do our best for him in order to stop
its recurrence.
In August, 2002, he said that he wanted to move to Shonan for his medical
treatment. Till then, he lived in his atelier in Tokyo (Horinouchi, Suginami-ku).
And we the parents divided and lived in our house (Hongo, Bunkyo-ku). However,
We had to pay attention to him more about meal etc. Then, we planned to
live in Kamakura (Inamuragasaki) together, and to take care of him as much
as possible.
His independent spirit was strong. He lived alone from twelfth grade independently. And
at least, he came back to our house, in order to take supper 3 times per
week. However, he was doing irregular single life usually: A capricious
meal, the work activities of midnight, and the life which goes to sleep
in the daytime and gets up at night. He was cpmpletely a habitual drinker
and smoker. He was a car mania, so used to drive with his sweetheart. He
was active and was a person which cannot keep still. He drew as many pictures
as several times of the painters of his age. So, I think that he was a
coplete hardworking person. An abstract painting seems to be able to draw
to anyone apparently, but it is the art which especially needs originality,
sensitivity, intellect, and power of expression among pictures. Therefore,
I think anew now that it was really great things for one young painter
that the works of Susumu Tanaka had been appreciated from the first stage,
he had many fans, and his works had sold well.
In April, 2003, since the sharp pain, which is like sticking the inner part of his right eye by red-hot tongs, recurred, he was hospitalized inTokyo.
Hoeever, the pain was not reduced even if it used the painkiller, he lost his appetite. He closed his both eyes, and the state of dozing had continued. And at last, he had become impossible to get up. Since he only received intravenous drip, he lost physical strength and become feverish. After all, fever did not go down. And he died at 8:00a.m., June 12, under his parents' presence. Finally, he opened both his eyesclosed untill now, and gazed at his parents quietly in his good face. And he closed his eyelid caimly, aged 34.
His ashes were sprinkled offshore of the Zushi Marina in August, and said
good-bye to him so that he could swim to the world.
After many bouquets were thrown by everybody's hands into the beautiful
blue sea during the dispersal of ashes, the light rain got down for about
30 seconds from the lavender color sky in which any rain cloud not exist.
It was a really wonderful spectacle. "Thank you very much, everybody,
and goodbye, "it should be Susumu's gift with tears of joy.
He was blessed with many good friends and supporters, drew many works,
and won the two major titles in France which was his target no less than
4 times by his twenties. Although it was too short, he ran through his
life with speed twice as much as others. We thik that his life was dense
and fortunate.
It is said "The best death to a human is to die to be regretted by
somebody. "However, I thnk that probably my son hoped to continue
to make his works more. I think that he are surely somewhere in Heaven
or worlds, and are surely continuing drawing his pictures even now.
