■プロフィール
　1961年東京に生まれる。幼少の頃より書家である母親に筆法を学ぶ。青年時知己を得て中国水墨画の技法に学び、北京故宮博物院の諸師と交流し、水墨に感銘を深める。　　
　1987年、パリ｢日本の美術展｣会場にての障壁画揮毫を期に、中国､インドネシア、アメリカ等で障壁画揮毫を重ね、各国で高い評価を得る。その間内外の公募展で多数受賞、1991年公募全日展常任理事、審査員就任。1992年には、天安門広場の中国歴史博物館に於いて、若手国外作家としては異例の文化部主催による｢中日友好20周年記念･小林東雲書画展｣が開催された。その後、精神性の高い日本の伝統的水墨画に感じ、社寺障壁画を手掛ける。
　現在、氏の水墨画は内外の美術館、公共施設に多く収蔵されている他、オフィスビル装飾の巨大壁画、CDジャケット、書籍、さらには企業の顔としてインターネットの画面を飾るなどの制作活動のほか、｢水墨画の巨匠｣コマーシャルビデオ(講談社)への出演や、｢水墨で描く｣(グラフィック社)ほか多数の著作など、水墨の新しい表現の可能性を探りつつ、多彩な分野で精力的に活動。現代水墨画の旗手として、また日本伝統美術の紹介者として、国際的にも
活躍中の作家である。

1987年 パリ｢日本の美術展｣渡仏。
パリ国際会議場にて水墨画｢天龍｣を揮毫。
1988年 作品｢昇龍｣芸術公論賞受賞。
パリ｢日本の美術展｣会場揮毫。
作品｢虎声｣日光山輪王寺賞を受賞。
1989年 亜細亜交流美術展招待出品。
パリ｢日本の美術展｣会場揮毫。
産経国際書会代表団として訪中。
1990年 ｢中日交流美術展｣会場揮毫のため訪中。
1991年 全日展常任理事､水墨画部､篆刻部､審査員就任。
中国文化郡･北京吉盛公司より美術鑑定会に招待。
1992年 天安門広場･中国歴史博物館にて個展。
1993年 赤坂･浄土寺障壁画完成。
1994年 タイベック（特殊化学紙）を使用した約180畳分の世界最大級水墨画タピストリー「墨夢幻」を大森ベルポート・アトリウムにて制作、展示。
テレビ、TX「おまかせ山田商会」出演。
ロサンゼルス｢HEART ART FESTlVAL｣会場揮毫の依頼を受け渡米。
カルフォルニア州観光局長賞を受賞。
1995年 旭･デユポン　フラッシュスパンプロダクツ株式会社設立パーティ会場にて、 巨大水墨画(6m×lOm)｢墨遊幻｣、および大掛軸｢白鷹｣｢白孔雀｣(5m×2m)を展示。
｢panasonic｣ホームページの表紙のための水墨画を制作。
1996年 インターネプコン'96(展示会)ブース障壁画揮毫。
ギャラリーのるすく、（南青山）にて個展「墨遊幻」開催。
臨済宗妙心寺派「法光」表紙。
テレビ、TX「たけしの誰でもピカソ」出演大水墨画揮毫。
1997年 メリルリンチ社会長送別パーティー会場の装飾（大型水墨画）及び屏風絵揮毫。
テレビ、TX「クイズ赤恥じ青恥じ」出演大水墨画揮毫。
1998年 テレビ、CX「あるある大辞典」出演。
「UK98」にて大水墨画揮毫。
1999年 ギャラリー　フェーマスにて大水墨画実演。

Tohun Kobayashi

Tohun Kobayashi was born in Tokyo in 1961. He learned calligraphy from his mother who was a calligraphy teacher. He became acquainted with "suiboku-ga" ink painting in his senior high school days. During associations with famous Chinese artists, he was impressed by Chinese ink paintings, calligraphy and "tenkoku" seal engravings. After obtaining an opportunity to make wall paintings at the "Japanese Fine Arts Exhibition" in Paris in 1987, he drew wall paintings in China, Indonesia, and the USA and earned high acclaim in these countries. In 1992, he gave a one-man calligraphy exhibition at the Museum of Chinese History in Tiananmen Square in Beijing to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Japan-China friendship. Later, impressed by traditional Japanese ink drawings, he engaged in painting walls of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. Besides engaging in creative activities using the internet, Mr. Kobayashi made a commercial video film entitled "Giant of Suiboku-ga". He has written many books, including "Drawing in lnk". Exploring the possibility of new ink Painting techniques, he is energetically engaged in activities in various fields. He is a standard-bearer of Japanese ink painting on whom great expectation is placed.

Chronology:

1961: Born in Tokyo.

1987: "Japanese Fine Arts Exhibition" was held in Paris where he demonstrated ink painting at the International Convention Hall.

1989: Went to China to have his works exhibited at the Asian Exchange Art Exhibition.

1990: Visited China to give calligraphy demonstrations at the Art Exhibition to Commemorate Japan-China Exchange.

1991: Appointed managing-director of the All Japan Art Exhibition to serve as judge of ink paintings and seal engravings.

1992: Gave one-man exhibition at the Museum of Chinese History in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

1993: Completed a wall painting at Jodoji Temple in Akasaka, Tokyo.

1994: Visited USA to comply with a request to give calligraphy demonstrations at "Heart Art Festival" in Los Angeles.

1995: Painted an ink drawing to adorn the Panasonic internet home page.

1996: Production of a CD Jacket cover "Ni-ten-ichi-ryu" for British rock band P H O T E K, released by Virgin Records.

1997 : He exhibited 5×9 meter suiboku-ga work on a folding screen, "Sumi-yuu-gen", at the reception party in honor of the chairman of Merryl Lynch. He gave a demonstration of suiboku-ga on a folding screen at the same reception.

1998 : A 5×8 mater suiboku-ga was demonstrated at the ''Riddiem & Phuture" music event, held as part of Festival UK '98.

1999: Gave one-man exhibition at the Tokyo American Club.

2000 : He exhibited a 5×8 meter suiboku-ga work on a folding screen, "Four seasons of  Japan'', at the event 　　　in Embassy of Australia. He exhibited a suiboku-ga work, "dream of Egypt", at the Embassy of Egypt.

Artist's Commentary:

"Suiboku-ga", a form of etching, has long been loved by the Japanese people. The simplicity of suiboku-ga is understated, yet inherently impressive. I believe that "sumi", or black ink, has the power to express human feelings and manifest the changing beauty of the four seasons. The starkness of the form inspires invisible colors in the mind.
