Now and Future of Nepal

Ms. Rees has an experience to stay in Nepal. When she was university student, She won a scholarship to field-work in Nepal. Dueing her visit in Nepal, she stayed the capital city, Kathmandu, and some other city.
Backgrounds
1. Geography
- Location
Nepal is surrounded by 2 big countries, China and India. It is 200km wide and 600km long.
There are 3 major cities, Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur. Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal. Bhaktapur is famous as a very ancient city.
- People
There are 25 million people called Nepalees living in Nepal. 90 percent of Nepalees are originated in India. Their ancesters came to Nepal thousands of years ago. Other 10 percent are Tibetian. Besides those groups, there are 33 ethnic groups in Nepal.
Thus, there are many ethnic languages in Nepal. The official language is Nepalee.

- Climate
There are 3 regions in Nepal, Flat Region, Middle Region, and Mountain Region. The climate of those regions are very different from each other.
- Flat Region
Alutitude: lower than 1500 meters
Most of farming is done in this region.
- Middle Region
Altitude: 1500 meters to 3400 meters.
This region is called Middle Hill.
- Top Region
Altitude: higher than 3400 meters
- Natural Hazards
There is the highest mountain "Everest" in Nepal. Including Everest, there are many high mountains in Northern area of Nepal.
2. History
- 800 BC to 300 AD
In 563BC, Buddha was born in Nepal.
Before 300AD, the cast system is installed. This system is still important in Nepal and India.
- 1300 AD to 1600 AD
In this period, the dynasty treated with art. Thus, there are many beautiful works such as paintings, music, and temples, made in this era.
- 1768 AD to 1990 AD
In 1768 Gorkha, one of the ethnic grope, unified Nepal. In 1792 British won the war against India and they colonized India, but Nepal could keep the own government.
In 1846 Rana took over and ruled Nepal. In 1951 King Mahendra established first congress party.
- 1990 AD to Present
There are quite a few problems in Nepal party system. They have many party in Nepal, so the government change soon because of inter-party fighting .
3. Economy
- Standard of Living
a. There are only about 1760 doctors in Nepal (in other words 1 doctor for 14000 people)
So the good advice is that "Do not to try get sick in Nepal."
