New@Medicine

"Only a few tablets in a day makes you so slim and Beautiful !"
"This medicine is surely effective for cancer patients !"
All these phrases sound very intriguing and we could easily be cheated by these phrases.

In reality, there are not a few people who are suffering from another problem caused by the medicine or who have exterminated their lives too early because of taking those tablets.

Of course, we have owed very much to the effects of medicine to treat the disease from sight to serious. It is said there are as many as 15,000 kinds of new medicines produced in the world annually.

Nevertheless there are some serious diseases which can not be cured by medicine now, and every kind of medicine is not completely effective, far less every medicine has its own after effect. So we have to keep in mind this fact.

Generally speaking, a new medicine can be approved after passing these categories.

  1. pre-clinical experiments by experimental animals
  2. to ensure the response of the medicine to let healthy people take as a sample
  3. to examine effect and safety of the medicine to let some patients take the medicine

During the category, the double-blind experiments are conducted to judge fairly without any preconception. Because a medicine has its suggestive effect and we sometimes feel better or alleviated only with an idea that this is a medicine and this makes you well.

It is not until in October, 1990 that any pharmaceutical company and medical institution is obliged to do the clinical experiments according to the criteria of execution of clinical experiments set up by the Welfare Ministry. It regulates more severely to protect the rights of the volunteers for the experiments and to pay more ethical attention to them.

To our regrets, some incidents related to the medicine have occurred by being tampered with data and ambiguity of the regulation.

According to this new regulation, doctors are also obliged to inform the volunteer patients of the effect and side effect of the prescription and ask for the agreement.

In Japan, the controversy about contraceptive pills for more than ten years is to be finalized, and to be approved early next year.

Besides for the safety, this issue has some problems. The pills has already been taken women in developed countries in '60s. The pills is effective not only for contraception but also for the ovary cancer and the menstrual disorder, while it has side effect against the cardiac infraction and the cerebral infraction.

Another problem has much to do with AIDS. Some people have been concerned about the proliferation of AIDS by lifting of the ban. Another problem is the concern about the sexual disorder.

In this modern society, medicine produced for the purpose of preventing or curing diseases could induce another serious problem. But we wish we could spend our life healthfully without any medicine.

Question 1: Are you easily dependent on medicine when you feel ill ?

Question 2: What do you think of the idea that Japanese doctors prescribe too much medicine ?

Question 3: Are you concerned about the aftermath of contraceptive pills ?

Question 4: Anythin about this topic
