At Flag Staff Hill. My K100D is still not back from repair, and I
had to use my camera without shake reduction. I thought I would
not get a crisp picture, but miraculously I was able to get this crisp
picture.
I suppose it was one of the three chicks left the nest of Flag Staff
Hill. Its bill is still not totally black and retaining some baby
face. |

A Blue Jay landed on the ground to pick a peanut. Someone
apparently left peanuts and corns to feed birds. A Blue Jay was
coming down, picked a peanut, and flew to a nearby branch to eat. |

Canada Goose
 |
 |
|
2007/04/13 *istDL 250mm F8 1/1500sec ISO400
This photo is taken in Chicago on the shore of Lake Michigan. This
is a big bird and does not fear humans. It is very easy to come
close to the bird and take a photo. If you want to take a photo of
a sitting or walking Canada goose, all you need is just a compact
camera. Using digital SLR was somewhat overkill. |

A female Cardinal. This bird was busy in building her nest.
Her husband was nearby the nest. However, he was not helping her
building the nest. Instead, he looked he wanted to go dating with
her. He flew close to her, and then flew some distance away, and
calling her to join him. Female bird several times flew maybe 50ft
away from home with the male bird, but she didn't stay long and flew
back to the nest for continue the construction. |

European Starling
A black bird with a clear high voice. According to
Birds of Pennsylvania Field Guide, Second Edition ,
this bird does not migrate, means that I'm supposed to see this bird year
round. However, they may be doing mountain training or some sort in
winter, and I do not see this bird in winter. This bird simply doesn't
stop on the ground. It is very difficult to take a sharp picture.
This bird is also cautious, and usually it flies away before I walk within
range of my 500mm.

I could walk close enough and took this shot. |
|
|
Gold Finch
A bright yellow bird. Very cautious and difficult to come close.
Even when I succeed in closing in, it usually flies away before I aim and
press the shutter button.

I took this photo on a walkway of Flag Staff Hill. It apparently
was a juvenile bird just left the nest. It's maximum cruising
distance was just 6ft or so, and the maximum service altitude was just
about 1ft. It was hopping after the parent bird. |

|
2006/09/17 *istDS2 320mm F5.6 1/2000sec ISO200
This photo was taken in Birmingham Alabama. I visited there for a
conference. Initially I could not identify this bird, but a viewer
of
From
Author sent me an E-Mail to tell me that it was a Mockingbird.
I thank him for the info! |
2006/11/02 *istDL 500mm F8 1/750sec ISO400
I took near Shenley golf course. I looked at Birds of Pennsylvania
and found that it must be a Mockingbird. I then realized that it
is similar to the one I took a photo in Birmingham. I received an
award in the second photo contest of
Japan Association of
Pittsburgh for this photo. |

I found the bird on the right singing, and the other bird came next to
him. So, I guessed the one on the left was a female bird. It
turned out both were male birds. A female bird was not supposed to
have a black spot on the cheek. Maybe they were just friends?
They looked friendly and didn't look like they were in a territorial
dispute. |

|
Red-Bellied Woodpecker
I see this woodpecker very often through the year. Nonetheless, it
quickly climb up the tree, and it is difficult to come close to take a good
picture. It's called "Red-Bellied" but its belly seems to me white.
 |
|
|
2008/03/20 K100D 500mm F9.5 1/350sec ISO

It is one of the three consecutive shots. I heard its voice from
my back, looked back, shot three pictures, and got this. |
|
|
Red Crested Cardinal
I took these photos somewhat far away from CMU.
I took these when I visited Hawaii in December 2006 :-) You can see
this bird in Honolulu very often. However, it is indeed a kind of
Cardinal, and does not like a human to come too close. It was not very
easy to sneak in to the shooting distance, but I was able to take some good
shots.

young bird, and the bill retains a baby look. A parent bird was
supervising it from a nearby tree branch. |

Ring-Billed Gull
 |
 |
|
2007/04/13 *istDL 330mm F9.5 1/3000sec ISO400
This photo is taken on the shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago. This
type of shot used to be difficult, or costly because I had to shoot many
times until getting a good one (or becoming more proficient.) But,
with my digital, I didn't have to care about film consumption and got
this good shot. |
2007/04/13 *istDL 330mm F8 1/3000sec ISO400

power/phone line or a tall tree.
